In my opinion, Rick Steves is helpful to people who have never traveled to Europe or have done so only in an organized tour. I believe his advice makes people realize & confident that they can plan an independent trip.
As others have mentioned, each guidebook series has its target audience. I may not be backpacking in youth hostels, but that doesn't mean I can't get good information from Let's Go or Rough Guide, for example. As with any post with the attitude of this one, my response can only be ... hey don't like Rick Steves, don't read him (watch him). What's it to you? |
Rick Steves travel videos are some of the best. He travels with a professional photo crew in a way that most people can't do. His books, hotels and restaurant suggestions don't interest me, but his videos are excellent.

I have to agree about Steves videos. I've bought and rented a few videos to prepare our family for Italy (I WANT TO GO NOW!!) and most of them are pretty boring. I think he's fun to watch
I find that he recommends to speedy travel for me and his accomodation recommendations aren't real helpfu because we want to stay in apartments as much as we can and that's probably too much sticking around in one place for him. But I like watching his shows. |
