Thanks for this info. I suppose ONE view is that a truly sophistocated traveler is able to gain valuable information from a wide variety of resources. At least Steves APPEARS on-camera and we KNOW how he dresses....and then there are the folks who post here.....hmmmmmm.

Any travel information source, including Steves, can provide valuable tips and information. No one travel information source is perfect. All of them have a particular audience that is best served by their approach.

To reject any potential information source out of hand is, at best, short-sighted.

What's wrong with a little fun??? I for one agree with RS that one MUST shop for groceries on Rue Cler (even if you're staying in a hotel). "Sort through pigeons, quail, and rabbit... rognons (kidneys), foie (liver), coeur de boeuf (heart of beef). You must SMELL the fruit and exclaim ooh la la la la la to show you're excited". Any other cringe inducing quotes out there????

What is Rick wearing this season? More black and less tan Dockers? I hope he hasn't changed that famous $4.00 haircut!

While we wouldn't be comfortable with the RS-style travel, there are some tips on sites, sights, and so on in his books that can be helpful. I agree with Rufus that one can find useful information in the most unlikely places, so it's best to be open to suggestion.

If you do a search on Fauxdors, you will find 1,000 threads attacking Rick Steves.

I don't care if people love, hate or are indifferent to Rick Steves - I still think it's fun to watch the show and see places I have (or haven't yet) been. A little armchair traveling never hurt anyone.

oh, faux, faux, faux, don't defend RS, you'll ruin our fun. Lets be fair to Rick, the inexpensive haircut makes perfect sense for a man who sticks his head out moving train windows. This season, we're referring to his shirt as seagreen. Word is his pants will have a sharp press, and the desert boots will be replaced by black clogs, shined. Reinvented. He will no longer take all meals standing. He will not say mercy.

I heared that Rick is going to be on "Queer Eye fot the Straight Guy."

Actually he's replacing Rocco, whose mom is a huge fan. Rick reminds her of a large meatball.

Oh man, a reinvented Rick Steves? That actually could be a good idea to appeal to the "geographically challenged" homebodied youth of America. Steve could shave his head and get Lasik eye surgery. He could pack lighter that way - no need to shampoo or worry about cracking his spectacles. I suppose he would get a bunch of insects in his eyes while sticking his head out of those moving trains. He reminds me of a dog going for a car ride. Anyway, instead of sensible trousers, shoes and easily laundered shirts, he could wear throwback jerseys and the type of pants that hang off one's ass. He can go commando so no need for underwear (plus an additional treat for the ladies when wearing those baggy low riders!) And to appeal to those of an alternative lifestyle, Birkenstocks on his feet. He could endorse Depends, he probably needs them after going on all of those beer binges he seems to enjoy. He does have nice hair though.

He He, RS needs you. Your image of his reinvention belongs to the ages! If RS were to so appear, it would be a marvel! I am amazed!

I'll watch almost anything related to travel but I'd given up on Rick because he seemed to have just reruns. But a few weeks ago I saw a show and there was a teenager of about 14-his daughter?! The last time I remember her she was in a stroller. Anyway, I've been enjoying the shows and I think that even if Rick is a bit dorky, we all have our dorky areas and he does travel for many of the right reasons [to really learn about the countries and people, etc.].
