Which is the best spot for a middle aged couple to stay on Rhodes. We like a bit of everything - history, beaches, shops, walks, bars and restaurants but nothing too noisy - we need our sleep at nights.

Lindos or Lardos - in that order. I am not sure about Rhodes Town at night regarding noise. Have you ruled out Crete - which I prefer?

Try RODOS PARK. It's a wonderful city hotel located in the New Town, but only about a five minute walk from one of the main gates to the Old Town, where you will find tons of restaurants, shops, bars, and plenty of history!

We stayed at RODOS PARK last July in a lovely,very quiet room overlooking the small garden and pool. We had stayed the year before in Faliraki, which to me is the Greek equivalent of Las Vegas. Much preferred the location and ambience of RODOS PARK.

Also within walking distance is a long strand of public beach.

Could you talk more about Crete, or link to a thread or site with good information?

My main interest in going to Crete would be Minoan artifacts, and perhaps a look at traditional rural life (and eating that great food!) But almost everything I see and read about Crete makes it look like a holiday hole for cheap foreign tourism, and that the artifacts and sites are either gone or compromised.

I'm willing to believe I'm wrong, but how does a sophisticated traveler get away from the worst of Crete tourism?

Weadles and I have nicknamed the pool area at the Rodos Park "Boob Central."

I hope you don't mind big German knockers, because you will see plenty--sans covering!

The hotel is right outside the Amboise Gate to the Old Town. You can walk everywhere.

Lindos is BORING! Just go for the day.

The beach out near the Rhodes Aquarium is really nice. It is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel.

Crete of course is famous for its Minoan culture, but it also has gorgeous beaches, caves, gorges,(one of the natural wonders of Europe) mountains, and some of the best food I've ever eaten in Greece.

I've visited a few times now, and my favorite spot is still the old harbor city of Chania, whose history is a blend of Greek, Venetian, and Turkish culture.

THe narrow, twisty streets left over from the Venetian-Turkish era, can be packed with tourists in the summer, but it's easy to escape to some amazing beaches,ruins, and the famous Samaria Gorge, either by bus or car.

We really loved the time we spent there, and also enjoyed a touristy but fun boat ride out into the harbor, where we caught a glimpse of the supposedly rare white goats(??) who live on some of the outer islands.

Crete is only about an hour by plane from Athens, and it's well worth the trip!

Rhodes old town is not at all noisy at night - all the cruise ship tourists have gone back to their boats. I would definitely plan to stay in the old town - much more atmospheric - and forget Lindos except for a day trip - and try to schedule that for when there are no cruise ships in port, otherwise it will be way too crowded.

I've also been at the Rodos Park and liked it. There were some British boobs, and my own much, much younger American ones.

I wasn't wild about Rhodes, but didn't really get the hang of the place until it was nearly time to leave. History for sure.

I would go back as a more informed tourist with some experience and a little research under my belt.

Much of the bust that was my trip to Greece was my own fault. Too much of some things, and not enough research.
