Rhine River

I've been reading everything about the Rhine River boating opportunities and have a question. Can you get on one of the steamboats/ferries from Bingen and go down river to Braubach and return on one of the same steamboats/ferries? We want to drive from Frankfurt and leave our car in Bingen, take a cruise on the Rhine, and then return to pick up our car in Bingen. I think you can take a train back, but would like to take a boat back. Thanks, in advance, for any tips.

Braubach to Bingen is the slow direction, going upstream. Just look at the time table. For KD, http://www.kdrhine.com/rhineschedule.htm.

Bingen-Braubach is down stream: 2h 50min
Braubach-Bingen is up stream: 4h 55min (only 2 per day)
Brauchback-Bingen by train is 1h 50min via Koblenz (www.bahn.com)

If you buy one way at a time, you can decide if you care to cover the same section again while spending almost 5 hours!

I cannot see the value of spending 5 hours returning through the same scenery that you just spent 3 hours passing through. Most other visitors also cannot either - KD sells the round trip boat ride very cheaply for this reason.

In Braubach you'll visit Marksburg Castle, right? It's the only never-destroyed castle you can tour on the Rhine.

Tip for you if you are able to catch that first northbound boat out of Bingen (9:30) - tour Marksburg and have lunch in Braubach - then with your round tirip ticket, board the returning southbound boat at 15:05... but DON'T ride it all the way back. Ride it to Boppard (ar. 16:00) on the west bank and catch the chairlift ride up to the 4-lakes lookout - then visit the old town of Boppard before catching the train back to Bingen.

The train ride back to Bingen from Boppard costs E10 and takes 30 minutes. You will see the river the whole way back to Bingen as the tracks follow the riverbank.

Another option for you...

Drive to Ruedesheim. Cruise to Braubach at 9:15. See Marksburg castle. Have lunch. Train back to R'heim along the east river bank, see R'heim (also has a chairlift) before driving back to the big city.
