Rhine on Flames
Anybody ever go on this KD river cruise, Cologne to Frankfurt? I presume it's fireworks or something. Thanks Frank

Frank: It is indeed "fireworks or something".

They have them several times each summer and that's it, no weekend event. We signed up about two months in advance.

We boarded our boat at Rudesheim (a cruise ship) and headed toward Koblenz. It's against the current, so the going is slow. We must have spent four hours on board having drinks and then dinner. We stopped around St. Goarshausen and there must have been 30 cruise ships and many other boats all along that area. At dusk, just when the sky is getting dark, all of the boats began to drift back toward Rudesheim. As you make your way along the river, each castle, and there must be 25 of them, send enormous fireworks from inside their courtyards, giving the impression that the river is on fire. What a spectacle! The fireworks are so bright, that in many cases, the nearby hillsides and towns are completely illuminated. It seems like the river is ablaze, really.

I can't remember what it cost, but I certainly remember the show. Best fireworks display that I've ever seen. If you have the chance, I'd do it.

Good luck!

Sorry, Lee, but from Rudesheim to Koblenz is northbound and your boat was moving WITH the current. The Rhine flows northward from the Black Forest and enters the North Sea near Rotterdam.

Hi, Frank. We were at the July 1 Rhein in Flammen in Bingen, just north of Ruedesheim. It was quite spectacular, and fun to be on the river promenade at such a late hour with hundreds of other onlookers. This was absolutely free, of course, except for all the beer (they serve it cheap and in nice glasses at the stands -- pay a deposit then return the glass -- cool), Bratwurst, ice cream and other goodies we couldn't resist picking up at the stands set up along the river. This festival moves to different parts of the region on different dates. I recommend you give it a try. We enjoyed watching the cruise boats go by in the dark, too, even though we didn't see as many fireworks as those on thw boats who followed the procession of fireworks.

Here's the website with all the dates, places and info. you need:

www.firework.rhine-river.com

Al: Whoops, you are right. Too many Rudesheimer coffees or something.

It had actually occurred to me on my way home last night while I was thinking about that trip. Thanks for helping me out there.
