Rhine/Mosel in March?
 

Just accidently (on purpose) found a really good fare from CLT to FRA in late Mar. '07. As we've been considering this area for our next trip, I'm very tempted but have some concerns about the weather.

I know temps are still going to be probably mid forties to perhaps upper fifties, but what's the likelihood of lots of rain? This wouldn't be a concern in say, Paris, where you can visit museums, exhibits and hang out in the cafes if the weather is foul, but we'd like to spend a fair amount of time outdoors between Frankfurt and Trier, soooo...

Anyone visited there in March? What chould we expect?

We were in this area this past March. It was chilly and there was snow on the ground but no rain. We had some lovely days.

It gets dark really early in March and some things will be closed.
It was easy to find rooms.

I wanted to add that we loved Germany so much, even in March we are going back next month.

I stayed in Boppard (Rhine Valley) for one week this past March and early April, it rained a bit not not cold, no spring flowers yet. It wasn't unpleasant to walk around.

Perhaps you know that the reqular Rhine and Mosel river cruises usually start at the beginning of April.

March and April have the lowest rainfall totals of the year for the Frankfurt area.

There is some good hiking along the Rhine cliffs between St. Goar and Oberwesel - through vineyards, forest and pasture - with lovely views. Ground will be damp then.

You can tour Marksburg castle in Braubach at that time of year. It's a nice hike up to the top of the hill from town. But other normally tourable castles will be closed, and many of the smaller villages will appear closed. Best bets for in-town action in the area: Mainz, Trier, Koblenz, maybe Boppard.
