Rhine Main Bad Constat Army Hospital

I was born in Germany near Stuttgart, Germany while my dad was in the Army. I am going to visit Germany and was wondering if anyone has heard of this hospital and can tell me how to get their from either Frankfurt or Heidelberg?

Hi babygator72,

Well I enjoyed this little searching trip. I found some links:

http://usarmygermany.com/Units/Medic...ope%201983.htm

to get information on the hospital, which is under the 7th Medical Command, USAREUR.

http://usarmygermany.com/Communities...dCannstatt.htm

which is a map of the hospital grounds.

From that map, I saw that the hospital is on Waiblingerstrasse and Brenzstrasse in Stuttgart, in the Bad Cannstatt area.

So I went to www.mappy.com and mapped out Waiblingerstrasse in Stuttgart. I see there is a rr station named "Bad Cannstatt," and quite a few hospitals in the area. None of the hospitals, though, are labelled as US Army hospitals. That doesn't necessarily mean anything because US Army installations generally appear as large blank spaces on civilian maps.

So from Frankfurt or Heidelburg, just take the train down to Stuttgart and then take a local train or subway to Bad Cannstatt and then look around for an obvious Army installation. Or ask at the Tourist Info desk in Stuttgart. Or just follow the cowboy hats!

Be aware that you may not be allowed in without a military id card.

If 72 is a reference to your year of birth please understand that the Army has downsized considerably in the last 30 years and a lot of places just don't exist anymore. Good luck on your search and swandav2000 is on the money, you won't be able to get onto any installation without an ID or an escort. Is there a particular reason you wanted to find the hospital or is it just for kicks?

That's what I call going back to your roots!

Are you related to Bob the Navi-gator, a frequent poster here?

Thanks all for your help on this one. I knew I wouldn't be able to enter the base even if it still exists, I would just like to pass by there and at least see the area. Thanks again, this should help alot.

There is no longer any sort of major US Army hospital installation operating in Stuttgart. I think the smaller clinic that was once operating there has also been closed.

Hi charlessteel6891, welcome to Fodor's. I am glad you found this post, although it is quite an oldie as you observe. Maybe someone else from the US Military will see your post and respond. Swandav2000 is still with us, maybe she will chip in later. I take it you were born in the Bad Cannstatt hospital?

I see a lot of posts by ex-military on TripAdvisor; if you are looking for something specific you might try trawling through their threads also.

I found a hospital in Bad Cannstatt on Google Earth that looks very much like the map in the link in reply #2. It even shows the railway line curving past the site. You can find in in Google Earth by typing into the search box: 48 48 38 N 9 14 08 E. it also works in Google Maps both in Default and Satellite view. Google Maps will help you find it on the ground.

Of course Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt is nowhere near Rhein Main.

Valuable information held up for review by the Moderators. 😡 I found the hospital on Google Earth! Hopefully it will show up shortly.

In case it doesn’t show up, type in the search box of either Google Earth or Google Maps: 48 48 38 N 9 14 08 E. Switch to Satellite view on Google Maps.

The US Army Hospital in Stuttgart - Bad Cannstatt was closed in the 1990s. Nowadays it is called 'Klinikum Stuttgart, Krankenhaus Bad Cannstatt'. It is one of the hospitals whose owner is the city of Stuttgart. Bad Cannstatt is a suburb of Stuttgart lying east of the city center. Stuttgart can easily be reached by train from anywhere in Germany and abroad. The hospital is in walkable distance from the S-Bahn stop 'Nürnberger Straße'. This stop is served by the suburban trains S2 and S3 from Stuttgart main station.
