Reykjavik, Iceland
I will be in Reykjavik, Iceland on Sept. 12 from 9 AM till 3 PM. (via cruise ship)Should we take a half day tour outside of the city, or stay in the city? And, does anyone know a good tour company located there that I could contact??

There is definitely enough in town to keep you busy, but I think doing a tour of the Golden Circle might be perfect. The two big tour companies--Reykjavik Excursions and Iceland Excursions--would be a good place to start. We rented a car and did the Circle tour in the timeframe you have available.

Get a rental car and do it yourself, instead of in a tour group. The Golden Circle route has good, well-marked roads. It's more expensive than a tour group, but much more pleasant.

Tourist info centre www.visitreykjavik.is can supply maps and routes that are signposted and last 2 hours each. For tourguides visit icelandguide.is, re.is or icelandexcursions.is.

Eeeek -- I wouldn't rent a car and try to drive the Golden Circle if you only have six hours in port! That would be rushed, and if you get lost, you're screwed. A lot of tours depart at 9:00, but maybe you could walk around the city and do a short whale-watching tour from the harbor?
As far as companies, we used Iceland Excursions for two tours and liked them -- low prices, friendly guides. |
hi beepie,
what happens if you miss the ship? i suggest either a tour that can guarentee to get you back for the sailing time, or sticking to Reykjavik. there are several good museums - we liked the National Museum very much - the harbour, restaurants, etc. more than enough for 6 hours or so. you can also do boat trips from the harbour out to the puffins, dolphins, etc. which will last an hour or so. regards, ann |
