Hello Rex thanks for the link. To anyone else that is reading this message I'm the "B" that Rex writes about in the above thread.

I still look back on the trip and consider it a success, mostly due to the hard work that Rex put forth to insure such. If given the chance I would travel again with Rex.

Update on some of the Georgia Gang down here. Jean, Lynn, and De have all gotten hitched since our trip. The fellow that Jean married is a WWII vet and vowed never to leave the states after getting back. That hasn't stopped Jean from traveling though. She made a trip to England this last summer to visit the relatives. Lynn and her new husband have traveled several times to Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific NW. I've lost track of De, although I know Lynn and Jean are still in contact with her. Myself, I haven't caught the marriage bug, be that good or bad. I made another trip back to Turkey after the China tour. Things have changed, and not all for the best after 9/11. I sent a postcard to your old address, did you receive it?

I hope that you can get another trip together. If you can let me know, Jean and Lynn have asked me several times when you were planning another one. Those two sound like they are interested in another one.

If my present circumstances where different I'd jump on the bandwagon in a NY second. This has been the busiest year of my life. Bought a house and remodeled it to handicap standards so that I could move my parents in. To say that it has been an adventure would be an understatement. I was able to get away to Nashville last month for a few days to attend a conference. I've got a friend that is a retired nurse’s assistant that helps me look after the folks, couldn't do what I'm doing without her help.

If you are able to get another trip into the planning stage, feel free to share my e-mail address with anyone who is interested that may have a question on how the last one went.

Take care,
Claye

Prospective information? No, and I don't think it ever has been. It's a repository for pictures, once they have happened.

I was looking for something else - - (Garda restaurants) - - and came across this posting from a year and a half ago.

It sounded like there might have been some "nibbles" of interest, but nothing that materialized.

Apropos or not - - I'll throw out the prospect of entertaining such a trip, again, in (fall? late summer?) 2007 - - and I'll come out with some news that I have shared with a few individuals...

I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in October 2006, and underwent chemotherapy november through the end of January. I am in complete remission, clinically and by PET-CT scan, and went back to work about three weeks ago. This does not mean that I am cured, but I could be well, for a long, long time.

Or not.

The same as any of you.

My wife and I were actually able to travel a little bit during treatment (a short getaway to Orlando, for a medical meeting), and prior to coming back to work, we went on a little celebratory trip to the Bahamas to dive (I got my open water certification last year in the Virgin Islands; she got hers "for me" this year, as a motivation for me to keep going with my chemotherapy). And for those of you who are curious, yes, I did lose my hair, but it is coming back with a vengeance now, thick and almost an inch long now.

So, I have mixed feelings about travel for the future. Part of me says that my only interest is travel/time with our daughters - - but realistically, they will not always be able to travel when (my wife and) I can or want to go.

Do I want to travel again with Fodorites? Probably yes, for all the same reasons as before - - the ability to stay in a (bigger) house or other self-catering property; the chance to make new friends through travel, and play (in part) the leader/"Rick Steves" of the group.

I have no specific agenda (destinations) though I remain partial to France or French-speaking Belgium/Switzerland. but my interests extend in virtually every directions from France - - Benelux, Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia. All of it. As Martha Stewart says - - it's a good thing.

Feel free to write me privately on this, if you wish, at least in the beginning, if such a trip is to happen.

It starts with one person saying... "hey, i think I'd like to do that, and here's where I'd like to go".

Rex, I've been wondering where you were. So sorry to hear your absence has been for such an unfortunate reason. I'm glad to hear of your remission - keep it up!

Rex, I have missed you too! A family member had the same dis-ease and after the same treatments in 1999 he is perfectly fine. Glad to you have you back in Fodorville.

Me, too, Rex!

Diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma - splenic lymphoma with villous lymphocytes - a rare type. Diagnosed in August of 2005 as benign (biopsy o fa swollen lymph node) and 3 months (November) later was found in my blood. I had radiation on my eye (lymphoma in lachrymal gland)during the winter of 2006 and just completed (in December of 2007) six months of chemotherapy due to a very large tumor near my kidney.

I have also been told that there is no evidence of the cancer right now! I worked through it all and traveled, too! My next check-up and scan is in July.

Rex, I wish you all the best - good health and happy travels!

dear rex,

first of all, here´s to a full recovery. i wish both you and marianna a clear, healthy future.

secondly, since i live in spain, and you are looking for "nibbles" of interest, i can say that a short two night jaunt somewhere near valencia, or here, in fact, would be a lot of fun...

i will not be going off to a villa for a week or more, but if you do get to spain, or have multiple 2-3 nighters around the country, count me in for a part of it if i can work the dates!

i might even be able to go to a few nights somewhere in europe of your choice.

keep us posted.

Dear rex,

I have always relied on your posts as a kind of baseline or lightning rod of truth, or at least sensibility.

My sincere wish for you, and for Marianna, is wellness, family, and of course, travel!

I have been wondering about you, too, Rex. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Lisa and I did take advantage of that low airfare to London you posted about last fall and had our usual wonderful time. Thanks again.
