Revised Italy itinerary-feedback please!!!
 

Ok, here it is: any thoughts/suggestions?

Day one: land in Rome (should we spend the night or go directly to the AC)?

Train to AC/Sorrento: 5nights (daytrips to Positano, Pompeii)

Train to Rome: 4 nights (or 3 if we spend our first night there)

Train to Florence: 4 nights (day trip to Tuscany)

Train to Venice: 2 nights, then fly home the next day.

We were thinking that we would like to de-stress from the wedding, etc by starting on the AC first. That way we could rst up for all of our sightseeing to come. Anyone know how long the train ride is to and from Rome-Sorrento, Rome-Florence, Florence-Venice?

Rome-Sorrento - 3-3.5 hrs (change train in Naples)
Rome-Florence - 95 mins
Florence-Venice - 2.5-3 hrs.

Push on to Sorrento. Your adrenalin will be up and you will be excited. By the time you calm down it will be bedtime.

You can buy all of your train tickets, except for the Circumvesuviana, at the train station at FCO when you buy your ticket to Rome.

I would also just go straight to Sorrento upon arrival. That way the next morning you can get up and start your trip without spending another day travelling. The AC is SO relaxing...a great place to de-stress after your wedding. Congrats!!!

Another poster suggested taking a day from the AC and do 3 nights in Venice. I have heard mixed reviews on Venice. What are your thoughts on Venice? Is it worth it to add a day? I heard that there wasn't much to do at night there.

ok, another question: if we go directly to Sorrento once we land in Rome, how much time should I allow in between? Is 2 or 3 hours enough time betweeen when we land and get to the train station for Sorrento? Or, should we just wait and buy the ticket for Sorrento after we have landed?

I can't help you with the train ticket question but this sounds like a very nice trip. I agree to go straight to Sorrento.

There are many things to do at night in Venice, but it is not a big party town if that's what you are looking for. What types of night time entertainment are you interested in, and how late?

Our last trip it took 3:30 hr from the time our plane was scheduled to land to get to the head of the tracks at the Rome TE station.

There is a nice self-serve restaurant there if you arrive too early.

Re Venice or AC: When are you going?

I would also recommend shaving a day of Sorrento and adding it to Venice. Venice is wonderful and there is much more to see than most people usually see, whether you are an art lover or not!

On my up coming trip, I also will be going straight from FCO to Positano. Since this will be my 3rd trip to Italy, I was just planning on buying my ticket on arrival. Of course, if you are traveling on a holiday, or peak season for Amalfi Coast, I would make a reservation.

I certainly hope it won't take the 3 1/2 hours it took Ira to get to Termini! I was expecting more like 2 1/2!

Venice is magical. I can think of no more romantic city anywhere!

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to do Positano for 5 nights and Venice for 3. We are going the second week of October. Anything I should be aware of re: Italy in October?

Be aware that you will probably have great weather during your October visit--one of the best months of the year in Italy.

The Porcini mushrooms are in season.

The olive oil has been harvested.

1/5 hours is a long time to wait for luggage! Do you think it was the airline's fault or just the size of FCO? I have not had to claim baggage at FCO before, but in Milan there was no wait at all!

Anyway, I'm not planning on checking luggage so maybe I can make a quick getaway.
