Returning SIM card
 

Hi everyone,

For this trip, we bought a SIM card at Leonardo daVinci Airport and used it during our two -week vacation. When we purchased the card, we were told we needed to mail it back in a self-addressed and stamped envelope we were given before we left.

Is this normal? Will we be giving personal data by sending the card back?

Don't send it back, I wouldn't.

This sounds as though they're reselling SIM cards. If it was an Italian SIM card, it would be illegal. Where did you buy it at the airport? There are some kiosks selling so-called "international" SIM cards. If you got it from one of them, you're lucky it worked at all.

This is a scam. There is no need to return the SIM card.

Also if you provided identity details at the time of purchase these may remain on file. Imagine if the SIM was then used by a terrorist or criminal. You could end up in a whole lot of bother.

In fact, if you have your phone stolen or even just the SIM card report it immediately to the police (Polizia di Stato or Caribinieri). This absolves you of any problems that may arise.
