Returning Car in Florence
 

We are renting a car at the Florence airport (Hertz) and then spending a week in Tuscany before going to Rome via train with my wife and three daughters. Anyone know if the Hertz return is close to the main train station or do you recommend returning it somewhere else in Tuscany on the main line to Rome? We are staying about 30 minutes north of Sienna in Castellina in Chianti. Thank you!

A word of caution, I wouldn't return a car near the train station for the life of me. Driving in Italy is bad enough, multiply it by 100 for driving in Rome.

Try retuning it to the main airport and take the short train to the termini. You will be glad you did.

Orvieto has terrific rail connections to Rome and is the "right size" for a place to return a car. I am not sure where the Hertz offices are though I imagine there is one pretty close to the rail station. Check it out online and if you need specific questions answered email the office and ask them details on getting there.

Maybe there is another stop on the direct line down from Florence that would be better - i.e. even smaller than Orvieto - but you don't want to do this too far north and be an a milk run train route.

The Hertz office in downtown Florence is only a couple of blocks from the main train station, an easy walk of about five minutes. Get the exact address from Hertz, then go to Google Maps or Mapquest to locate it for yourself. You can get back from Castellina to Florence in about an hour or so via the Autostradelle.
Driving in downtown Florence is not for the timid, but it can be done. Parking there is another issue. We once spent several days in the Chianti region. For a daytrip into Florence (not returning the car), we parked just south of Florence, in Botai, and took a bus into the city.
Florence is incredible, and Castellina is a very charming little city. Hope you enjoy it!

Corrections: the highway is the "Raccardo Autostradale Siena-Firenze," and we parked and bought tickets for the bus in "Bottai."

Drop in Orvieto---the drop office is close to the stazione.

If you decide to do it in Florence the major issue is locating the office, IMO. The actual drop-off point is around the corner from the office in a car garage.

I've done it and the distance to the station SMN is easily walked.

As to the driving IN that part of Florence, it is not IMO that difficult. I've driven in far worse places here in the US

Agree with Bob - drive to Orvieto and drop the car there and then train to Rome. Seems much easier adn then you may be able to see some of Orvieto with your kids.
