Return Travel from Bologna to Roma family of 4

Any advice on travelling between the two cities? Tried to book the family rail pass on-line but could not navigate with any success? One way auto rental looks like 85 Euros/each way. Any help out there

Currently Trenitalia is running kids "go free" specials... If your children are between the age of 4-12, you can get all four of your tickets for €84.80 (2nd class using the "Familia Estate" fare). Per person the 2nd class base tickets are €50.40 so this is a huge savings. If your children are NOT in this age group, be prepared to pay more.

Renting a car may be a better option if your children are older. It is LONGER driving and you will have to pay tolls, gasoline, and insurance on top of your rental rate. We came home from Bologna on the backroads last trip (I think SS64) and had a wonderful, albeit longer, trip.

The train station is right downtown in Bologna, so quite convenient, and on the high speed trains, it's about 2 hours, 50 minutes.

Hi mak,

>Tried to book the family rail pass on-line but could not navigate with any success.<

Lucky you. A railpass is much too expensive.

You can buy your tickets as soon as you arrive in Italy. What's the rest of your itinerary.

Hey Rinr,

Thanks for your reply. We have children are 6 and 8 and the "Familia Estate" fare would have been perfect. When we checked the Trenitalia website - and it seems that the offer is for AV trains - as far as I we could see AV trains do not operate between Bologna and Rome. The best family fare so far seems to be with a 20% discount 131EUR each way. Great comments about petrol, tolls and distance - time.

ira,

We are catching a plane to Split, Croatia and will spend 22 days on the Makarska Riveria - awesome place to holiday. Still a big secret to North Americans - don't tell anybody!

There are trains denoted AV that travel between Bologna and Rome. I just got a fare of 84.80 Euro one way on one of them.
