The main bus depot (really a parking lot) is across the street from the port. So if you have limited time and want to tour the island, it would be best to get a hotel close to the port. I think that many of the hotels in Ischia Porto are, in fact, close to the port! There is at least one very highly rated on in that area, the Aragona Palace, and you will find more when you search. A location is Ischia Ponte would be slightly more appealing, but then you have to take the mini-bus to the bus depot. It is a real puzzle and I went back and forth on location--look at the thread linked above about finding the best base on the island to give you more idea...
Again, with limited time and if you want to explore the island by bus or go to the beach, stay near the port. |
The only non-stop aliscafo from Sorrento is early in the morning unless it's different in the summer. Whenever we're there, that's been the case. Otherwise you have to go from Sorrento to Naples to Ischia.
What ekscrunchy says is correct. If you stay around the port you have more direct bus service but Ponte is just a connecting bus. Ponte is more appealing, but Porto is fine. There are no bad sections in Ischia. Most people don't rent cars so they have to access buses all over. |
debp: Hi there!
I've just answered your other question, about restaurants near the Europa here on Ischia - our home almost eight years now. You'll find way too many pictures from around the island, and a variety of information that may be of assistance in planning your trip, here... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/allaboutischia If you've asked about hydrofoils as a way of getting here from the AC, I can tell you that two operators offer routes that let you avoid going into Naples.... - it's actually Alicost who run that service from Salerno (this year it started on June 14th, leaving at 07:50 and getting here by eleven, but they've long taken down that timetable as it ended, much as usual, on September 17th). - the Alilauro line has a late March/early April to early November service, from Sorrento, at 09:30. (Probably worth taking the time to point out the importance of that June 14th week: it's when this year the schools here closed for summer and most of the bus and shipping companies brought in their new summer timetables! The timing shouldn't be very different in 2011, but who knows?) If neither of those work for you, the other alternative might be to come via Capri - from where the Alilauro line have a late afternoon crossing to Ischia. Shout if anything's not clear.. Peter PS - yes, Ponte is MUCH more appealing! |
Thank you again Peter, I just realized you also commented on this. I think the 9:30 from Sorrento will work for us. Thanks also for the above link, I will look at that next. I will be sure to let you all know my next question as I'm sure to have more to come. Thank you all for your help!

Im only up to Oct 09 and I am about to watch The Talented Mr Ripley.....while DH is away. Who would have thought ekscrunchy that 4 years later your story would still be travelling the world! (here in Sydney). We hope to spwend 3 nights in Ischia before meeting friends in Sorrento mid September this year! PS Anne1 - Im with you on the bunny thing but my DH loves them!

how did I miss this first time round? thanks for topping it italydreamer!
bmking to read later. |

yes, Peter, the giro arrives with you tomorrow.
no pics for us as it's only on eurosport which we can't get, so i had to resort to listening to it on 5Live extra which isn't the best medium for following cycling, but at least i got to hear it live which is about the closest I'll get. Shame, because I'd have loved to see the pics of Ischia and of Cav wearing his Paul Smith designed pink jersey! |
We get the UK Sky News here, and they had some brief clips of the Naples stages in the 'sports' roundup... so you might try that?
Peter |
I discovered last night that there are highlights on Sky every evening, so I'll be recording those.
sorry to hijack the thread! |
Bookmarking for future reference - Thanks for another great report

Bookmarking as well. That rabbit sounds heavenly :)

Speaking of rabbit, this week my hometown newspaper features an article and recipe on this often overlooked protein; I still remember that rabbit in Ischia, and hope to savor it again!!

our butcher had some fresh rabbits for sale today but as we are going out to lunch tomorrow, i didn't get any.
next week perhaps. I shall have to try cooking them "alla Ischiana" |
Ann: Let us know how it turns out, if you do cook. I still salivate when I think of that rabbit meal at Da Peppina. One of the best dinners I've had in Italy, I think.

Topping for former Fodorite who I am still in contact with and is considering Ischia for this summer..as is my sister. and husby..who can now easily find this, once she returns from Newfoundland!!! (Between the fires and the tragic submersible incident, I hope they are ok!!)
I long to return to Ischia and hope it has not changed too much since our visit...my partner and I often reference this trip as among our most favorite...I am very glad that we spent all the time on Ischia and did not venture to Capri, where I visited for the first, and probably, the last time, decades ago. Something to remember, said over and over and over again: When you are you are young, you lack the money, when you are old, you lack the time!! Now learning how true this old adage really proves to be....how many more years do I have to travel, unfettered??? Ten, fifteen?? Yikes, sorry to be such a downer here!! |
Sorry I am topping this again as we are now seriously considering Ischia, with Salina, for next year...maybe intermediate stop at Tropea??
|
Thanks for the wonderful, evocative TR-going into my "save and must replicate this trip" file. Also, interesting about the "special meal"--good to know that it worked out in one direction. I used to do that, too, but after one such request on an int'l flight left me w/little more than some bread and hummus (and the meager snacks I brought on) for dinner I stopped requesting it. Will revisit. Good luck w/the renovation and sick computer. That's an unpleasant combination
