Just to keep you up on this "saga" - my daughter went over the itemized $282 bill along with me and we found $105 worth of calls and text messages that definitely didn't work. I sent that info to Mobal as requested yesterday but have not heard back.

In addition, the credit card she ended up using for several calls (which, of course, Mobal also charged for) and the collect calls to my home phone total more than $100, which I also told Mobal in the e-mail.

Something funny that occurred to me...when I first e-mailed Mobal about the problems she was having with the phone in Germany, they told me she really needed to call them at their office so they could give her direct assistance. I didn't think of it at the time, but how was she supposed to call them on the phone that was defective ABOUT the phone that was defective?

Maybe the office thought she could use another phone, ie. hotel room or pay phone...

I've just finished reading both of these threads on Mobal. Great information.

So has anyone recently returned from a trip to Europe where they unlocked their Mobal phone and then used another SIM card that they picked up along the way?

Yes, but you'll have to search on "Mobal" to find it -fairly recent.

Postal's outcome from Mobal was posted on the other thread relating to this forum, but not this one, so I thought I would add it here too as it seems like it was good news.

"OK, Mobal and I have come to an agreement about the $29 phone my daughter had plenty of problems with, along with the $282 phone bill. They are crediting me for every call 2 minutes or less which means about $120 was removed from the bill. In addition, they credited the phone (which my son in Germany has now - but not using!) $100 for future calls. So I'm pretty pleased by their response and commitment to their customers. The end of the saga!"

I'm very glad to hear this, as I was pretty pleased with their service last year. As has been said before, this is not a CHEAP option, but it's very simple, and low commitment alternative. I will use my phone again this summer.

We got my d a $49 Mobal phone that turned out to be unlocked and she used it in Italy with an Italian SIM card we bought on the Net. There was absolutely no problem.

The only negative was on our end. My plan had been to call her, using one of those discount prefixes, rather than have her call me. We later found out that when I called her using my 1016868 prefix, it was not cheap unless I was calling a LANDLINE phone in Italy.
