Restaurants in Vienna

Hello! I would love to hear recommendations for nice restaurants in Vienna. Not only for vienese cuisine but also generally
nice places to eat while there. Also if anyone knows any contemporary restaurants, we're very interested on that too!

We really liked Stomach, but that was a few years ago.

I really enjoyed the Rote Bar Restaurant at the Sacher Hotel. I ate there before the opera, in October, and I couldn't have had a better experience. When I entered and mentioned my reservation time, they greeted me by name. My food was delicious, and the service was extremely attentive. They even served an amuse bouche and a tray of bonsbons after dessert. It was not inexpensive, but I feel the experience was worth the price.

Ciel at the Grand Hotel Wien was nice too, but I preferred the Rote Bar.

We recently returned from Vienna. We liked the Griechenbeist Restaurant at Fleischmarkt 11. Also, the older Figlmueller Restaurant. There is a newer larger restaurant also but we preferred the old original place
where you find the gigantic weinerschnitzel (sp?)

Agree that the Griechenbeisl is a wonderfully historic restaurant with lots of atmosphere. We thought the food was pretty good too.

Another restaurant that we enjoyed as much for the location as the food was the Palmenhaus which is set in the Burggarten.

For something a little different, if you plan to visit Schoenbrun Palace, you can have breakfast or lunch at the Cafe Gloriette and enjoy the beautiful views overlooking the city.

If you are ready for a Michelin star, I strongly recommend RieGi: Young and modern, excellent cuisine and still affordable. Right in the center, close to the Hofburg.

If you prefer middle-range and traditional cuisine, Plachutta is a must for Tafelspitz which is served in three courses. Several locations.

Along standing institution of Vienna is Julius Meinl in Graben (in the heart of Vienna). Impressive food store and friendly restaurant with a privilege view of the Graben. http://www.meinlamgraben.at/meinl.as...2&l=2&

A great place for creative modern cooking is the restaurant in Palais Coburg:

You can also enjoy their food in the less formal surrounding in their Garden Pavillion (less expensive).

Just want to add another good place to eat just across the street from Julius Meinl called Zum Schwarzen Kameel. You can eat in the restaurant or buy their inexpensive elaborate sandwiches:

Another favorite place to eat is the Steiereck in the Stadtpark. You really can't go wrong with this place.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful suggestions!!!!

Would you recommend any of these for New Years eve as well?

I'm trying to find some photos of 'stomach' restaurant but no such luck!! Does anyone has a link where i could see a photo of that place as well?

I don't have a specific restaurant suggestions, but I did want to add how much we enjoyed Vienna when we were there in December of 2007.

It is an absolutely beautiful and delightful city, spotlessly clean and full of friendly people.

Enjoy your trip!

bettyK We climbed the hill and it is a beautiful view from the top. We had ice cream at the Cafe Gloriette. Very good. The waiter shown on the website waited on us.

Was a wonderful day - sunshine, beautiful gardens and a fantastic view.

We have enjoyed Griechenbeisl as well as the restaurant in the basement of the Rathaus (city hall) downtown. One night while we were there they had a harpist playing. It was lovely.

Enjoy your trip!

Hello Christine:

We will be in Vienna over Christmas; this is our second visit at that time of the year. After hitting many of the notables the last time, we are going to try some of the "biesl" type restaurants. Here are some of my selections for the week:

Ristorante Firenze Enoteca

Glacis Beisl

Vincentís

Griechenbeisl (mntioned by others)

Grotta Azzurra

We are staying at the Bristol and will do Christmas Eve at the Korso which is terrific, but the restaurants listed above are decidedly less ostentatious. We are looking forward. Gradyghost
