Some tips:
The prawn skewer (brocheta de gambas) at Goiz-Argi: http://www.todopintxos.com/pintxos/p...verficha&id=39

The fabulous anchovies (anchoas) pintxos at Txepetxa (all they have are tasty ancovies pintxos in almost unthinkable variations):

La Hoguera (the bonfire) at Zeruko: http://www.todopintxos.com/pintxos/p...verficha&id=86

The sirloin at Gandarias: http://www.todopintxos.com/pintxos/p...verficha&id=27

The txistorra or any mushrooms at Ganbara: http://www.todopintxos.com/pintxos/p...verficha&id=42

The famous Gilda at Casa Valles: http://www.todopintxos.com/pintxos/p...erficha&id=165

Not a pintxo, but you should have a plate of the out of this world cured ham in emblematic La Cepa. Expensive and worth every penny: http://www.barlacepa.com/en/

In general, just ask for the house special (especialidad de la casa), and you will be treated like a king everywhere.

And I must admit, I've also commited the sin of making a full meal out of pintxos a couple of times, but - god forbid - never several pintxos on a plate. If they hand you the plate, you're in the wrong bar ;-)

Kimhe, a venial sin...the worst one is to have them on a plate!! Back your suggestion of ham at La Cepa, but I must confess that my favorite in SS is a small bar in one of the streets close to La Bretxa market...no tourists, no other bars on that street...wonderful, spectacular fresh grilled squid on a piece of bread...

I do not remember being in another town where you can get such a wide selection of tapas for breakfast.

mikelg Apr 23rd, 2015 03:58 AM

IMDonehere...pintxos, not tapas (it´s a different concept). Almost any town in the Basque Country offers a great selection of pintxos in any bar...San Sebastian is the most known, but Bilbao (for example) offers almost the same thing.

Sorry Mike, I forgot. The last thing I want to do is get embroiled in the pintxos, tapas, raciones, how many angels can fit on the head of pin argument.

Sorry if I sounded a bit rude!! This may help...https://mugalari.wordpress.com/2014/...asque-country/

And this one, old entry on an old blog of mine too, http://www.blogseitb.us/basquetouris...-not-a-racion/

IMDonehere Apr 23rd, 2015 07:50 AM

No, you weren't rude. I just forgot my pinxtos-tapas definitions.

Mikel,

Are you talking about Rekalde? Was highly recommended to me back in the 90's, but haven't been there much. Have to catch up!

I had one of the best steaks I've ever had at Bar Nestor, which is also known for its tortilla.
