Restaurants in Rome
My husband and I will be in Rome for 4 nights at the end of May. We love good food--any type of Italian. Does anyone have some recommendations. We would prefer something in the moderate range (up to $100 for two with wine), although we are flexible about that.

dang it, that wasnt it
Put Franco in the search box and scroll down to his Rome thread. |
You wil find food is excellent in most places in Rome. Just avoid any restaurants in the immediate vicinity of tourist sights that have menus in multiple languages or pictures of the food (those will have awful, overpriced food).
In 6 trips to Rome - mostly just wandering into places that looked good - we have never had a bad meal, and most were excellent for the money. |
Here's the link to Franco's Rome resto recommendations.

I actually had tried to look up Rome restaurants before I posted my message. I thought that maybe I could get a few current recommendations as the threads mentioned seem to go back to 2006,and have a lot of responses connected with them (time consuming to go through). I certainly will go through them, but an update would be appreciated too.

Hi, our prices were on the high side because we generally ordered and ate everything this last trip, but check out my report for some ideas. We were in Rome Dec. 27-Jan. 4:

p.s. I have a long list of places we simply did not have time to try as well, many/most of which are a bit more moderately priced.

For true traditional Roman dishes;
Checchino, via Monte, Testaccio. This restuarant just south of all the tourist congestion offers excellent food at non-tourist prices about $40-60/person. I suggest you make reservations. If you spend some time in the Testaccio neighborhood, there is an excellent permanent market with everything from extra frash produce/fruits to fish mongers and salumi of all types, cheese, fresh meats, wine, etc. etc. |
