Restaurants in Rome
I will be staying in an apartment at Piazza de Pasadiso in Campo di Fiori in Rome in a month. Need some ideas on restaurants nearby and grocery stores. There will be 6 of us (4 young adults 20's, and 2 moms). Nothing real expensive - and my youngest son loves pizza. What are the grocery stores like? If we eat in, they will be simple meals - are you able to buy American type products? Two of the young adults like teenage type food - not gourmet items.

My wife and I liked Da Giggetto in the old ghetto on Via del Portico di Ottavia, and Al Pompiere, also in the ghetto on Via Santa Maria dei Calderari. Al Pompiere is more upscale than Da Giggetto. Both are good, and both are close to the Campo di Fiori area. For a light meal, try Insalata Ricca, with branches all over Rome. The closest one to Campo di Fiori is on Corso Vittorio Emmanuel, near the intersection with Via dei Chiavari.
The salads are excellent, and they also make pizza. I suggest eating breakfasts in your apartment. You can get good bread and rolls in a bakery on Via dei Chiavari. |
Right on your piazza is Trattoria Dar Pallaro which has a fixed price (22 Euro pp) menu. You get many courses, water and house wine for that. Kids love their rigatoni. The Insalatta Ricca mentioned above is a good suggestion and just steps away from your apartment. Also nearby in Largo di Librari is Santa Barbarb which is only open in the evenings and serves delicious deep fried cod and veggies. Kind of like a Roman version of fish and chips. Very inexpensive. Da Baffetto Due, a branch of the famous Pizzeria is also close by. For a bit more upscale but still reasonable meal you could head over to Ditirambo or Pierluigi. I don't believe there is a full scale grocery store on Campo di Fiore as there is a market every day until 1pm selling meats, fish, produce etc. There is a deli type store on the Campo and another one further down on Via Giubbonari. I'm sure there is a grocery store somewhere in the neighborhood that your apartment owner may be able to tell you about. Otherwise, there is one on Giustiniani between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Not sure what American type products you are looking for but you'll be able to buy cereal, soda etc. there.

There's a couple of small stores in Campo di Fiori itself but we had rented an apt in a small campo by Campo di Fiori. There was a great store called “I Maestra del Fresco” on Via dei Pettinari, the short alley that connects Campo Monte di Pieta to Lungotevere then the bridge to Trastevere. It had basic household items, a great deli and wonderful bread selection. There was a bit of fresh fruit and frozen items.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Can't wait to get there!

Oh, I'm am so jealous! I wish I was going there with you.
Anyhoo...we stayed right off the Campo, and I just wanted to let you know that there are several restaurants all around the Campo. I think you could eat a meal at a different restaurant in the Campo for your entire trip and not even try them all. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend any specifics, as we just wandered around and stopped wherever looked good, and never paid attention to the names. However, I will say that everything I ate was very delicious. |
There's a grocery store not far from your apartment on Via Monterone. Go up to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, turn right and go a very short distance to Monterone, turn left there. It will be on your right and is easy to miss. It's not a big sign.

The ghetto area mentioned by sjj is close to the Campo de' Fiori and an interesting neighborhood to visit. We ate several times at Il Portico on Via
del Portico d'Ottavia which was more informal than the ones sjj mentioned. It had a range of offerings including pizza and the traditional Roman food like fried artichokes. My son who was 16 and is a fairly picky eater found plenty to eat at simple trattoria where you will find chicken, steak, pizza, etc on the menu . |
We rented an apartment overlooking the Pantheon and spent a lot of time at Campo dei Fiori. Here are details:

Oh, we also ate at Il Portico on Via
del Portico d'Ottavia and had the fired artichokes...you MUST get them. |
fried...not fired

Near Trevi Fountain: we had a great meal at Rosa Rosea. Fresh and delicious caprese, and wonderful raveoli

I am staying in the area next month, too with my daughter - right on Piazza Dei Monte Pieta.
In addition to the mentioned groceries you can shop at the Standa department store in Trastevere. It is a bit of a walk but they have a really well stocked grocery in the basement level of the store. It is on Viale di Trastevere. I also love the grocery store on (I think) it's Via dei Gesu (parallel) to Via dei Cestari. I am also a fan of Insalata Ricci but there are also lots of great little restaurants in Trastevere, too. Check out some of the restaurants on Vicolo del Cinque And Via Del Moro. Lots of great selections and a cool neighborhood for the 20ish crowd (and mom's). |

I'll second Pierluigi...we have had a number of wonderful dinners there. Also, on Piazza de Popolo you might like to try Canova, its a great spot for lunch or dinner and the people watching is A+. There are a number of small restaurants and pizza places around that area that might just fit the bill for you, I hope you enjoy my favorite city.

Directly on Campo die Fiori is the Restaurant La Carbonara. It would be recommendation for authentic, non-touristy Roman food.
www.la-carbonara.it/ristorante_en.htm Note that Romans do not eat pizza for dinner. Pizza is a kind of sandwich. You usually buy it at a streetstand. Italian pizza has a very thin crust and much less toppings than American pizza. (Same is true for pasta. Italian pasta never contains notable amounts of meat. You have to order meat separately as the main course.) |
Great spot to stay.
I would buy my fruits, veggies, and homemade pasta every day at the Campo de' Fiori outdoor market. It's in the morning and clears out about noon. We have some video of the market on our website. Click here to see some video of the spiceman selling typical Italian spices in Campo de' Fiori: http://www.webvisionitaly.com/catego...p;ref_item=179 From your apartment, you'll walk to Campo de' Fiori entering from northeast to the right. Right there - maybe 2nd stuido in - on the right is a nice little bar - the waiter goes by the name "Lovely". Enjoy a lovely drink there. Say hello for us. Across the Campo from Lovely, on the southeast side is a butcher should you want meat, chicken or fish. Another nice spot to find some more local trattoria is down the via dei Cappellari(street of the hatmaker)off the southwest end of Campo de' Fiori. You could follow this all the way to Vittoria Emanuele and across to right on Vicolo Saville is another spot fulll of locals, excellent food at great price. In Campo De' Fiori, where Via dei Cappellari is to the hard left is Vicolo dei Gallo, heading into Piazza Farnese. There is little trattoria on right that is very good and inexpensive - but I forgot the name. Right across the Vittorio Emanuele from your apartment is the Piazza Navona and Via Dei Governo Vecchio. You will find plenty of trattoria on Via dei Governo Vecchio. Mimi e Coco is fun for a drink and snack, and next door is a nice trattoria. One street West of the Piazza Navona is Via della Pace. You'll find some very nice places to eat there like Da Franceso, Virginiae, and the "Yellow Oven" at 2 Via Della Pace. Al of these are very reasonable trattoria - not expensive ristorante. The Yellow Oven (we call it this because oft he yellow tiles around pizza oven - no clue as to real name) has great pizza. Your son may like to compare this pizza to typical Roman pizza, which is razor thin, like that over at Da Francesco. Yellow Oven is not thick but it is not razor thin either.
