Restaurants in Rijeka and Split?

My husband and I will be touring Slovenia and Croatia in September. The tour has a nice balance of included dinners and dinners on our own. That said, we have never been to these two countries and would like some advice for Rijeka and Split. I would prefer places that feature lamb, pork or fish with no terribly hot, spicy dishes. My husband would love the latter and I would just suffer all night. I have read the few posts on this board for the two cities and found few suggestions. Help, please!

Have you been to your library?
In planning my Fall 05 trip there, I have Fodors, Frommers, Lovely Planet & Rick Steves in hand w/more coming from interchange today.

There are suggestions w/price range
in all of these. I just skimmed this portion but I can relate that fish is dominant on the coast & while the
wine is touted, it's claimed to be
pricey.

May I ask whom you are using for the tour?

Thanks for a response! We are using Grand European Tours with whom we did a 16 day tour around France a few years ago. That was the first time we had used them and were extremely pleased.

September should be truffle season in the Istria region (pretty sure) - the spicier dishes are probably more hinterland, closer to Hungary and Bosnia.

You may want to check VirtualTourist.com - some of the members theres should have specific suggestions beyond the guidebooks.

I've been through Split a few times - on my way out to Hvar - so I can't make any recs. Check VT.com

Thanks for your comments. I have looked at VT.com and found the comments pretty sparse for Split. But it is a source.
