RESTAURANTS IN PARIS
 

Hi there
We are going to travel Paris this march and we will spend 3 nights. We are a party of 5 young people in our 30's and our father of 60 years old.
We are food lovers. Our interest is not fancy restaurants , just authentic and quality cuisine.
Could you recommend places for lunch and dinner as well as some interesting Caffe to spend some free time.
Any special detail of these cities will be very nice as well.
Half of our group already knows these cities and the other not.

Have you by ANY chance searched the probably 150 (I won't say "jillion") threads on this board that pertain to "restaurants in Paris".

How wonderful that you are all going with your father! We went with our children (in their 20s) ten years ago and it was an amazing trip.

Gretchen is right, the best thing to do is to look at the other threads. You might also let people know more specifically things like where you are staying (the arrondissement), what you are looking for, and your budget in Euros. Do yOu want to have a special dinner? Things like that.

One thing that others have mentioned is that you can have a fabulous lunch for much less than dinner. And if you choose the prixe fix menu, you can save.

You are going, like now?? At what hotel and in which arrondissement are you staying? We prefer to walk not-too-far for dinner after walking far and wide all day.

By the way, Thin, what is that hotel in the 5th that you have recommended, want to say it's on a corner, but forgot name and now friends of ours have asked for my shortlist; it was not available in September when we were over, however.

in the 5th a good one is Collège de France (hotel du)Thénard, 7 5e Métro Maubert Mutualité, or
Saint-christophe Lacépède, 17 5e métro Jussieu for reasonable prices.

Hotel des Grands hommes Panthéon (place du, 5th) was real great but more expensive.

Meal plans in Paris are fun to do in advance with your group after you acquire a list. And reservations at many places (even the local faves) will be a must and especially for six people. As you probably know, dinners are late so you will have your long days of sightseeing intact.
Lunch, unless it is a special place (Tour Eiffel is our best one--or La Coupole) will often be the area where you are touring and reading the posted menus.
Another idea for lunch might be the restaurant at Musee Orsay while you are there visiting.
You also may find that with a party of 6, not everyone will want to do everything together every day, and then you may meet at the hotel in the late afternoon for dinner together.
You might think about hiring Michael Osman as a guide for a day for your group--you will thoroughly enjoy it and maximize your time since some of you may know a little about Paris and others not. Everyone will benefit.

A couple of not-fancy places we like are:
Le Christine -- small, intimate, reasonably priced, good food. About 4 blocks from the St. Michel Metro station.

Les Patios -- go there if the weather's nice and you can get outside seating. Prices are good, and the food is adequate. Nice ambiance; often students play musical instruments in the area. Between the Sorbonne and Luxembourg Gardens.

We enjoy lunch at Cafe Varenne and also like Bar de Cuisine for wonderful tatines at lunch. For cafes, we like Le Bonaparte by the St Germain des Pres church and also Danton at the Odeon metro stop.

While it will not be the best steak you ever had, we enjoyed Relais de l'Entrecôte...steak fries and salad is all they serve but it's good. No reservations but they move people through pretty quickly.

I have recommended Hotel College de France here and also L'Abbaye in the 6th.

I usually don't stay at hotels in Paris, stay with friends instead.

This place is a bit unusual for Paris but was so much fun and we thought it was great, also good bourbons. American bbq with a big French twist.

It really depends where your hotel is as to what would be an interesting cafe to hang out as I would presume you mean around dinner, before or after? I wouldn't cross Paris to do that, I always do that around my hotel.

I often stay in Montparnasse, and there are several cafes fine for that on bd Montparnasse, some with a long history (like Rotonde or Select). I also like Cafe Odessa down near Quinet metro stop. I suspect you aren't in that area but you never know.

When around Bastille, I like Cafe Philosophes. But there are several around place de la Bastille, just pick one that looks good (ones on the northeast side can be very young, though).

Try a Relais d'Entrecote for dinner one night, there are several in Paris.

thank you very much you guys for all your posts. we are staying in Les Marais, but also as we are going to be sightseeing we could eat in other places as well. we don't like expensive fancy restaurantes, we think best meals are the authentic and simple, however if the food is worthy it we could go to an expensive restaurant without any problem.
