Restaurants in Nice
 

Hi everyone. A friend and I will be traveling to Nice in mid-October. We will be there for 5 nights. Would love suggestions for restaurants. My friend doesn’t eat meat or poultry but that still leaves us plenty of options. Even though we are tourists we love seeking out those out of the way places where the locals go.

Here are recommendations from prior Forum messages as well as from another Nice blogger. We will be there second week in October, including a Sunday, which I have noted below when open. I have not checked all the other websites as to openings/closings. You should get several responses as did I.

Yes, it’s a bit out of the way but it was near our hotel, The Ellington Hotel.
Some people we met in the hotel bar said “go there, fantastic food”

After 2 weeks of French food it was perfect. We are home 2 yrs. now and still talk about the food here. The kind of food you remember. Not pizza, although they have it. But fresh, fantastic choices of Italian & Mediterranean food.

There are plenty very good and very bad restaurants in Nice. Many bad ones on the Cours Saleya. But when I go to Nice (often) I want at least 1 meal on the Cours Saleya. Safari https://www.restaurantsafari.fr/ is not a Michelin recommended restaurant - but we have always been pleased with our experiences there. Reserve in advance. We've dined at several Michelin starred restaurants in Nice.

Here are a few choices from a part-time resident:

For beach clubs, I like Le Galet. Some rave about Amour or Bleu, but I have not tried. Although food is just OK, I love the view at Le Plongeoir (not a beach club, but a spectacular location)

The Armand Crespo restaurants are all good fooda and value -- they close in August to take their holidays as they don't need the summer business. Bistrot d'Antoine, Comptoir du Marche, Bar des Oiseaux (pasta-centric) and for your friend, Peixes (fish centric)
Le Sejour Cafe is good as is Zorzetto. La Merenda and Chez Davia are also two choices for Nicoise cusine. If you want vegetarian or vegan, the place to go is Racines, near the Liberation market.

For Michelin-starred -- Jan, Flaveur, Pure et Vie, Les Agiteurs

I agree, Le Safari is the best of poor choices in Cours Saleya. The general rule is to avoid the restaurants on Cours Saleya, Place Rosetti and the pedestrian zone (rue Massena) -- but just off is fine.

These are all Italian, Nicois or French. If you need any other cuisines, just ask.

We are planning to do an evening walking tour. It starts in Place Massena and most likely will end there. Are any of your recommendations in that area. Tour is 6 to 8 so we will have time to venture in another direction. We like eating late so time won’t be a problem.

When restaurants list their hours, is the closing time when the kitchen closes or when the restaurant closes?

And, we hope while up at St. Paul de Vence for the Maeght Fondation to have lunch at the one and only Colombe d'Or and soak in all the art and history of that spot.

You are welcome. If you are looking for a restaurant near Place Massena: at the Galeries/Jean Medecin side, there is Le Sejour Cafe a few blocks away, with Chez Dava nearby. In the fine dining category, L'Aromate is close (Flaveur is a few blocks further -- definitely walkable). We had a nice meal at le Boudoir, about a block away, near our friend's place. Some people like Geppetto which is right nearby, but we have not been yet. On the fountain du soleil side of Place Massena, in the old town, Peixes is close by, as is Fine Guele. Both are closed on Sunday, however.

The time (say 8:15pm reservation) should not be a problem. Things are a bit later in the south. Though things do tend to be quieter on Sundays

Well, I must say glad I put together my restaurant list for Nice, and must shout out a big thank you to whoever first recommended La Voglia, at the end of Saleya at Rue St F de Paul. While the quantities are ridiculously oversized, a worrisome feature, we thought the quality outstanding. No wonder it's packed ten minutes after its 7pm opening and long line outside when we left at 8:30. And it was a change from Paris dining so maybe that's why it was so appealing. Ended up with having two dinners at LaPerouse due to being too tuckered out on other evenings to leave. Love that place -- so quirky -- and now closed till April for another renovation. Staff there for years, that says alot.
