DAX--if you get to Berlin sometime, had a wonderful Eisbein (and a few nice mugs of Bier, too) at Brauhaus Georgbrau, Spreeufer 4, along the river just across the Rathausstr. bridge. I was the only person in our little group with the courage to order it, but once I let everyone have a little taste I had to fend off their forks for the rest of the meal.

Jake: Thanks for the tip, I've seen Georgbrau but never ate there. I'll definitely try it the next time I come to Berlin again. Eisbein is even trickier than Haxen because there seems to be even more variation on how it's made, some are crispy and dry, some are just wet & meaty, but I like it when it's crispy on the top but soupy with broth at the bottom. Do you mind telling me how they did their Eisbein?

My wife's cousin very graciously played tour-guide for us several years ago and took us to several of the places they frequented. They were committed vegans - not an easy thing to do anywhere in Germany - and their choices for dinner were skewed in favor of availability of vegetarian dishes. We ate at their fav pizza place one night. The other dinner was at Prinz Myshkin, which was very nice, very cosmo - tho' I had to snicker at the smokers (but not meat eaters!). Hey, I'm Californian - I'm an equal-opportunity deride'r. http://www.prinzmyshkin.com/index.html
The wife and I also ate (and drank) at the Augustiner (very good), Lowenbrau (OK), and merely walked through the Hofbrau Haus - which I suppose you have to do. Dalmayr was closed due to our timing the visit during the Good Friday/Day-before-Easter/Easter-Sunday/Rose-Monday outage, and I'm a upscale deli afficionado, so I regret that omission. |
Although it is too late for the OP, I just found the name of the restaurant that we enjoyed very much on our visit to Munich 2 years ago. Zum Kloesterl, St.-Anna-Str. 2 (just off Maximillianstrasse): http://www.zum-kloesterl.de/
We had a lovely meal, mostly German and Austrian food, for around €100 for 4 (I had pumpkin filled pasta with butter, parmesan, and tomato; nurenburger sausages; and lebkuchen souffle for dessert.) |
