Restaurants in Barcelona

Can anyone recommend good restaurants in Barcelona? We would prefer places that are not for tourists.

Believe it or not, there is a fun little place on the "main drag"...called the Kansas Cafe. It is open almost all day long, has mostly locals eating there, and is reasonably priced.

Try the Restaurant Reguant. This restaurant is not frequented by tourists and is really quite good. It's located on Casanova, 15 (close to the University).

I regret that I can't recall the official name of this restaurant but it is part of the Hotel and Restaurant school. It was Hostellerie..... and excellent. The students worked really hard to cook and serve a nice meal. Ask your hotel concierge!
Ellen

Anne -Rose,

Try EL MUSSOL in the Old Quarter. Lots of locals of varying ages, good open grill, post-industrial type of interior. It's very popular.

If you want to splurge try Agut D'Avignon;(D'agut Avignon?) locals plus tourists, elegant place serving regional specialities, in the Old Quarter down an alley. Reservations are a must.

Finally, if you haven't done so, do a search on this forum as I recall several suggestions.

Michele

I agree with El Mussol. We had a great meal there, and it was reasonably priced.

There will be some tourists at 7 Portes but it's a good place anyway. For something more intimate and gourmet, try Ca l'Isidre--excellent.

I highly recommend Caricoles - a wonderful restaurant serving great food and good value for money.

Anne-Rose,
You'll find plenty of tourists at Los Caracoles, but you just can't beat their delicious spit roast chicken. If you go to Set Portes (a Barcelona institution since 1826) on a Sunday afternoon (reserve!), you'll find large groups of Barcelona families enjoying plates of "pa amb tomaquet" (a kind of Catalan bruschetta)and wonderful paellas-handsome "country inn" decor.
NY Times (9/12/99) article on Barcelona restaurants praises CAL 'ISIDRE, CAL PEP and CAN SOLE (a seafood restaurant in the old fishing neighborhood of Barceloneta). Food and Wine recommends Ca L'Isidre and Set Portes too.
I can add SENOR PARELLADA to the list-in the Barri Gotic near the Picasso Museum-a bright, sleek, tiled bistro with yellow walls, atrium with skylight, designer look that fills at mid-day with art and publishing people-few tourists have discovered it-first rate food.
Happy eating!
Maribel
