restaurants in barcelona
Anyone have a recommandation for a restaurant in Barcelona for a 50year anniversary ? We will be about 20 guests and want to have a room of our own.

My favorite Barcelona restaurant -- and a great value, I think -- is Set Portes ("7 Doors").

Set Portes Restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in Barcelona and in Spain. It is situated in a neoclassical building -- with a black-and-white tiled floor and classic elegance -- considered to be a national monument. The restaurant was founded in 1836 and in the last 50 years has served a total of 10 million customers and sold 3 million paellas (paella is the house specialty). $25-$40 for dinner plus wine

Set Portes
c/ Paseig Isabel II 14
08003 BARCELONA (SPAIN)
TEL from the US: 011-34-3-3193033
FAX from the US: 011-34-3-3194662
Web site: http://www.mss.es/setportes/setp0.htm

I do not know if they have a separate room, but it is a very large restaurant and would have no problem accommodating such a group, I would think. Give them a ring or send a fax (I reserved a table by fax last year).

Good luck.

John H

John> Great suggestion. Went to Set Portes when I was there several days ago and had a great lunch. It is right near Port Vuell (sp?) and quite easy to find. An alternative will be to rent out the Goyesca restaurant of Hotel Arts. Maybe a bit touristy but with no one else around other than your friends, who cares?

Have eaten at Set Portes and the food was good, but we thought the whole atmosphere and service were very stuffy. Also the place seemed so brightly lit. Our favorite (bit more rustic place, but with great food) is Los Carocoles on Calle Escudellers in the Gothic Quarter. We sat on a balcony area which overlooked a large private room below. There were about 14 or 16 that night, but I would imagine they could seat 20 -- all at one big banquet table. The room is filled with antiques and there are dozens of hams hanging overhead. It's a really fun place.

I would suggest Casa Calvet -a Gaudi townhouse that has been converted to a restaurant. Food was wonderful - try the taster's menu.

Check Fodor's restaurant rants & raves.
