Restaurants Geneva

Looking for good ambience/good food/good wine restaurants in Geneva or vicinity. Relaxed atmosphere, no stuffed shirt places-please. Thanks

Kate, "In vicinity" - over the French border - you will find many restaurants to suit your preference. I can't remember the name, but we just drove out into Savoie and found a memorable country auberge one Sunday evening. The hunt is half of the delight. John Bermont www.enjoy-europe.com

I don't remember many places, but Au Pied de Couchon in a lovely old town area in an ancient bldg. in Geneva was upscale but down to earth, brimming with relaxed locals and had well prepared food. (And not exclusively pork!)

Hi Don't remember the names but in the old town centre : 1) Serves only Entrecote ............ cooked at the table and excellent. Probably called L'entrecote ! Mainly business clientele at lunchtime. 2) With a US colleague, this one was recommended by a cab driver (usually to be avoided). In a cellar, plaque on the wall ......... US Pres. Clinton ate here ! Geneva has some really good restaurants. Try some of these: For lunch: Coté Parc (tram stop Terrassiere) General good bets: Café Zinette; L'Angle de Dix Vins (in Carouge), Café des Negociants (in Carouge), Café de la Place (maybe a bit expensive); L'Evidence (behind the train station; great French atmosphere, a bit gaudy but excellent food); Esquisse (in Eaux-Vives); L'Universal (a Geneva institution); L'Opera Bouffe (theme of the interior both visually and audio: opera); Les Fous de la Place (you're surrounded by book cases and great ornaments); Restaurant de la Gare des Eaux Vives; Hotel Tiffany restaurant (also has a neat little bar in back) Middle Eastern food: Café Metis (very laid back, student atmosphere, great sampler dish) Trendy: Café des Bains (near the Modern Art Museum MAMCO) Very small, full of atmosphere: Equinox (in Carouge) Korean: Maison de Corée Thai: Sam Lor (in the Paquis area - if you absolutely want Thai, go here); Sawasdee (in Carouge) Enjoy...

To supplement mpprh's reply: Yup, the restaurant is L'Entrecote, believe it's the one below the old town, on a street just inside of the lake road. Steak and french fries are the main dish. Very French interior - and, aren't all the waiters and waitresses dressed in black/white? - The Clinton restaurant is Les Armures (also a Hotel); a Geneva institution for fondue and raclette, very traditional Swiss food. A nice one. Clinton pictures are inside... - Also, there's Mortimer's in the old town; again, more of a student atmosphere, close-seating and a bit noisy, but excellent pasta dishes. And one of the best chocolate cakes to top off your meal...

The place where Bill Clinton dined is called 'Les Armures'. It'a restaurant with mainly typical Swiss dishes, but is also a hotel. It's located in the old town. You can read their menu on their web site. It's not that expensive, especially the cheese dishes aren't. www.hotel-les-armures.ch/

It's called 'Relais de l'Entrecote', Rue du Rhone 49, open daily! A French style brasserie, very popular with locals and visitors.

Kate - just to make your decision more complicated, there's a great, relatively new Italian restaurant in Geneva called "Incontro". Have had a great pasta dish there, plus an espresso after the meal is super. Always packed, but service still fine. Kinda noisy, but hey, that's part of the atmosphere.

The "Clinton" restaurant is very good. Also, over the border in Ferney, France in the Hotel de France is a great restaurant and much cheaper than Geneva. I live in Geneva, but sadly, rarely eat out. Saving all my money for traveling this beautiful continent.
