Restaurants at Salzburg
 

I saw someone posted at another forum that they would recommend the following restaurants at Salzburg:
1. Wilder Mann, Getreidegasse 20
2. Pizzeria Il Sole, Gstattengasse 15
3. Stadtalm, Monchsberg 19
4. Krimpelstatter, Mullner Hauptstrasse 31
5. Zum Fidelen Affen, Priesterhausgasse 8

I wonder if anyone has any comments?

I am also interested to know if the University Mensas eg Mensa Toscana at Sigmund Haffner Gasse 11 provide value for money.

I honestly can't give answers about the restaurants you posted because I haven't been, but I will say that our favorite meal in Salzburg was at Stiftskeller St. Peter. The restaurant is supposed to be one of the oldest in Europe, dating from 803. The food was wonderful and the location and ambiance equally wonderful.

We had several dinners at Il Sol in Salzburg. Great place.

We were in Salzburg for 10 days over Xmas and New Years....much longer than necessary, but we did LOTS of day trips. After a while, we needed a break from the rich german/austrian food and Il Sol did the trick.

Our kids had pizza, but my husband and I had other dishes. My son is keeping track of his favorite pizza places all over the world. Next to Winnie Bagoes in Queenstown, NZ and New York Pizza in New Orleans.....Il Sol is #3.

Over this past Xmas, our neighbors went to Salzburg and their son celebrated his birthday at Il Sol - based on my son's recommendation. They weren't dissappointed.

What is the price range for Il Sol?

Wilder Mann is an inexpensive and fun place to eat for typical Austrian cuisine. Don't expect gourmet but hearty, everyday food.

Stiftskeller St. Peter is more upscale and 'elegant'. Most evenings there is a Mozart Dinner Concert.

I haven't been to the others

I've not been to any of those, but do second the recommendation for the Stiftskeller St. Peter. We also enjoyed Cafe Glockenspiel, on Mozartplatz and Eulenspiegel, just off Getreidegasse.

We were in Salzburg over New Years. Had our NYEve dinner at Blaue Gans on the main shopping street, Getriedegasse. Excellent. There is a bar area, a restaurant area and a wine cellar, all of which serve the same good menu of updated trendy food. Across the street is Carpe Diem, a bar downstairs and upstairs dining room that serves all of its food in cones--like savory ice cream cones. Very hip, very trendy. Stop in for a drink and order a couple of cones to see if you like it well enough to book dinner. The decor is terrific.

We stayed at the Goldene Ente which has a restaurant on the ground floor on Goldgasse, just off Getriedegasse. It's a very traditional Austrian beer hall type place but on very small scale. Very warm, welcoming. Excellent traditional food. Lots of families.

Also went to K&K on Mozartplatz. Again, traditional food. Good. Nice upstairs small separate dining rooms.

Finally, we also had a meal in our daughter's hotel, Park Hotel Castellani. Very nice food. Chestnut soup was a big favorite. Food lighter. Not traditional, heavy. Pleasant decor. Salzburg is a wonderful city. Good food. Enjoy

Oops, almost forgot our total favorite--Nordsee. there are two of these on Getriedegasse. They are fast food, fish and seafood. Best fast food in the world in my book. You pick up your meal at the counter downstairs and take it upstairs to a very pleasant dining area. Everything from herring sandwiches for 1.8 euros to half lobster and lots of seafood salads in between. yummy.

I would put Il Sol in the moderate category - depending on how much wine you drink. I really don't remember the prices (it's been several years) but I don't remember it being very expensive.

I wouldn't necessarily consider Stiftskeller St. Peter to be that upscale. The price range was similar to other restaurants we ate at in the area, and we certainly didn't see a Mozart Dinner Concert the evening we were there.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I mist say that Stiftskeller St Peter is impressive, and I would definitely want to try eating there.

I think you'll like SSP. I would call it upscale--not so much in high cost but in terms of high quality food, beautifully prepared and served and excellent, professional service.

If the weather is warm (not sure when you are going), sit outside if you can. Very cool atmosphere.

The dinner concerts are held upstairs. Advance reservations are required if you are interested in that combo.

Thanks for the clarification JN. We ate in a dining room on the first floor in the back. It seemed like a fairly relaxed atmosphere, although I'm certain it would feel more formal upstairs with a concert.

I'm getting hungry just thinking about the delicious turkey schnitzel I ate!

Best food in Salzburg? Without a doubt it's the Bosna stand on Getreidegasse. I arrange my itinerary just to make a stop there for their delicious sausages on flat bread covered with tangy mustard, curry powder and the smelliest raw onions in the World. Your wife won't kiss you for a week after eating there, but that Bosna is worth it.

We had dinner at the "Sum Fidelen Affen" outside; it was casual, with wooden chairs and tables under big yellow umbrellas.

The food was very good. The main reason we went there was because my husband asked the concierge at the Sacher Hotel for a place that served the "best beer" in Salzburg, and that's where he recommneded.

So we went mostly for the beer, but the food was very good as well.

We also enjoyed the SSP and the Goldenen Ente.

I heard that Wilder Mann has recently been taken over and the food has gone downhill since. Is this true? Thanks.
