Aperitivo hours with free buffet are a much more northern Italian invention that has crept south only recently. Ravenna has been traditionally one of the more punctual, business-focused cities of Italy, sober & reserved, and it oddly adds to its charm & personality.

The pasta I was referring to is cappelletti, or "little hats." We enjoyed a series of cappelletti tastings in Ravenna; don't recall ever seeing it elsewhere, though it surely must be.

We were in Bologna for 3 nights but one dinner was liquid @ BoaVista after our food tour. For dinners, we enjoyed Ostera Broccaindosso - very simple, local and fun. We felt like locals - several pastas and main dishes. They just kept coming out until we begged they stop. Then there was dessert and after dinner drinks.

We also enjoyed Trattoria Serghei as recommended above.

We're going back to Bologna for a week in mid-November and plan to do a lot of day trips. Thanks for the Ravenna suggestions, massimop, southam and annw.

yes, now that you remind me, I do recall reading about it. It's more common in the Romagna part of Emlila Romagna but not exclusive to Ravenna.

One gets very mixed reports about Osteria Broccaindosso which has been in business a long time & popular with students & large groups. Some people love the huge portions & the dessert extravaganza, others just aren't happy with the quality of some of the plates (I'm in that category). A long walk from the Baglioni, but might be it If you are a committed dessert lover

Initial reports had it opening in September, so we had planned to go prior to the tour in late October. We had booked our tickets to fly into Bologna just a few days before they announced they were not opening until November 15th. We plan to stay in Padua prior to the tour and then stay a week in Bologna so we can go to Eataly, with day trips to Ravenna, and small villages south of Bologna.

Prior trip in 2012, we went to Parma for a day and spent 7 hours on a tour on the Italian Days Food Experiences with Alessandro. www.italiandays.it

Just wanted to update this thread to say that this weekendI had an extremely disappointing dinner at Teresina. I'm hoping it was a one-off, but it was so disappointing that I would no longer recommend it. Hoping that "dac" fared better than I did and that she will return at some point to share her experiences, good or bad -- and sorry if my recommendation netted her a disappointing dinner.
