Restaurant suggestions for Cardiff
 

does anyone have any suggestions for restaurants in and around Cardiff? Is there a specialty of Wales that we should try? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I would say medium- would like to go to some of the restaurants where the locals go. We could splurge one night, but if there enough good restaurants on a medium budget, I'd rather do that.

I visit Cardiff once or twice a month and can recommend two non chain restaurants where locals go. Both are a mile or so out of the city centre and may require a reservation at busy times.

I looked through my travel log and there is nothing of note. Two policemen recommended a clam bar called Miller End. I couldn't find it.

Oh - Susan, I've just noticed that the previous thread where Mucky & I gave restaurant recommendations was... posted by yourself !! Mucky lives in Cardiff and I visit fairly frequently.

The only Cardiff I know of is in Wales and it is on the sea. Why wouldn't there be a clam bar there? I probably got the name of the place wrong with the accent.

Clams are not very common in the UK (Scotland is good for shellfish but I've only ever seen clams on sale here once) and I've never heard of a clam bar in the UK - it's just not something we have. There are razor clams, I suppose, but even they are not that common although I do see them for sale occasionally. We do have oyster bars, although I've never heard of one in Wales. The most popular shellfish in south Wales is cockles but I can't really imagine a cockle bar :-)

Since most placenames in the UK have several counterparts in the US I thought maybe you were thinking of one there.

There is a place called Cardiff by The Sea in San Diego.
Not really many welsh resturants left these days.

Lots of resturants to suit most prices brackets in the town center lots of italian and pizza resturants asweel as Thai and portugeuses scatttered around. Then there is the resturants on Mill lane and the newly opned St Davids 2 http://www.stdavidscardiff.com/ also the brewey Quarter http://www.cardiffoldbreweryquarter.co.uk/ all within the town center can you can get to on foot. In fact easier with out a car. For a nice trip worth going to Mermaid Quay not far from the town center Cardiff bay bus runs every 10 mins from town to the bay or it it just a shot cab ride if you want to get a taxi, but the bus is easy to do. Parking down there can be an issue if there is lots going. There are all sorts of eating places from pubs, cafes and resturants. http://www.mermaidquay.co.uk/
A few of my favourites are In town The Maderia, http://www.madeirarestaurante.co.uk/ Gio's restaurant in The Hayes. Cafe Jazz http://www.cafejazzcardiff.com/ The spice quarter in the brewery quarter. On Mermaid Quay Signor Valentino Demiro's are my two favourites and duirng the day time a weksh ice cream from Cadwaladers is amust. It is worth you paying avist to Cardiff bay as there is lots to see and do and as it is on the waterfront ot makes for a great palce to eat.

I know you have been and gone, but for reference, there is a restaurant called Miller and Carter in Cardiff bay.
It used to be the Monkey tree. It's a steak house, doubt if they sell clams?
Sorry not been there, Mrs Muck (who has been to every restaurant in Cardiff bay) says service is very slow and she wouldn't bother again.

Just for information, there is a fabulous Indian take away on City Rd. It's called 6 flavours, looks like a cafe but food to take away is gorgeous. http://www.6flavours.co.uk/contactus.html

It's very busy but food is very good.

Went lunchtime, which had a reduced choice,(also reduced price :-) )

I tried:
Indian-
Mexican-
Japanese-
Chinese-

(All on the same plate)several times

Also fitted in every desert they had (don't worry they are only small portions ;-))

My only complaint. They had no Guinness.
