Restaurant Recommendations in Mainz, Germany?
We are flying through Frankfurt on our way to west Africa and staying overnight at the Hyatt Regency in Mainz. Looking for suggestions for a nice place to eat lunch and dinner that is not too far from the Hyatt. I have a bad knee and can't do a lot of walking this trip. Fortunately, we have visited Mainz before and have seen the Chagall windows, the Gutenberg Museum, and gone on a short river cruise. Suggestions for sight-seeing in the afternoon would also be welcome. Thanks!

Hm, a place I am thinking of is a little walk from your hotel but you could combine it with some sightseeing; there is a restaurant called ALEX (actually a chain of restaurants, also in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt) at Gutenbergplatz. Check it out on Google Maps. Young and fresh, very popular, and not too expensive. Has been running for a number of years and still packed.
ALEX Mainz Gutenbergplatz 14 55116 Mainz Telefon: 06131 14 47 350 Open hours Montag bis Donnerstag 8.00 Uhr bis 1.00 Uhr Freitag und Samstag 8.00 Uhr bis 03.00 Uhr Sonn- und Feiertag 9.00 Uhr bis 01.00 Uhr You can check out the menu at their website, which is admittedly all in German, but you might be able to pick your way through it with a menu dictionary or Google Translate so you'll know in advance, if language is an issue (or post your questions here and hopefully someone can help): https://www.dein-alex.de/speisekarte-mainz I am partial to Flammkuchen, which they do well there. I would combine this with a visit to the Mainzer Dom, the 1000 year old cathedral in Mainz, which is just a stone's throw away from the ALEX. Quite awe-inspiring to think that people were building enormous structures like that so long ago. I could suggest other things in Mainz, but not sure how far you are prepared to walk. The old town starts from just south of the Dom, and it is pleasing, if not enormous. Near to your hotel, to the south, is also the Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding and the Roman Theatre, so they might be an option. The museum is actually a pretty good one. Lavandula |
Oh how dumb of me, I found the English (and pretty much another 5 languages as well):

I've stayed in that hotel. Are you wiling to spring for one of the rooms on the top floor? They have wonderful balconys on which you can get a great view of the river especially if you are in one of the rooms at the end of the floor.

If you locate the Hyatt on Google Maps and zoom in, this one is only about two blocks away: http://www.tripadvisor.de/ShowUserRe...alatinate.html

One of my favorites: Heiiggeist, about a 10-15 walk from the Hyatt

Thank you all for your input. I will take a look at the restaurants before we leave. We did visit the Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding on our first visit to Mainz - great museum - but I don't think we toured Mainzer Dom so we can do that this trip.
We reserved a room with a Rhine view but not sure whether it is on the top floor. We'll find out when we arrive, I guess. Thanks! |
