Restaurant Recommendations in Latin Quarter (5th)
 

Hi!

My husband and I are travelling to Paris at the end of September for our honeymoon. We are staing at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the 5th Arrondissement for a week.

I'm a total foodie - but he's not...and I'm afraid I won't be able to convince him to pay more than 40 Euros/person for most of our dinners.

I'm looking for recommendations for restaurants in the area (walking/or close taxi ride fine) that represent good value for money and a convivial atmosphere.

Any advice for this first-time poster (and serious lurker) would be much appreciated.

I'd start with a search here...there are tons of threads on this topic.

all are in the 5/6th, last two are in 4th on Ile de la Cite.

We like Le Petit Pont, chez Fernand on rue Christine, La Reminet , Mezza Luna,
Vagenade , Reine Blanche, L' Ecluse wine bar....there are cafes and bistrots, just about every other building.All are in the 5th or bordering on the 6th but totally walkable from where you are staying

Maybe you can talk him into a bit of a splurge at www.le-train-bleu.com (for the decor) or, if he doesn't mind wearing a jacket, lunch at www.taillevent.com - 70E pp.

There is a nice selection on the main street of Ile st Louis (excluding perhaps Sergent Recruteur).

Likewise, if you walk on the Left Bank, along the Seine, east (away from the back of Notre Dame) you will come across quite a few restos, some quite good.

Among them, kerouac mentioned the 5th's fantastic Lebanese community. I had some of their food the other night and it was outstanding!

A friend of mine also recommended L'Epouvantail in the 4th, which doesn't look too expensive based on its menu.

We really enjoyed our meal at Le Bistrot d'Henri, it is in the 6th. Have the chocolate mousse.

There are lots of very cheap restaurants on rue du pot de fer right near your hotel. Just walk down it and take a look. Some are too cheap for me, but maybe your husband will love it. Auberge le Pot de Terre is one on that street that is okay http://www.lepotdeterre.com/

If you like raclette, Au Piano Muet (Savoyard cuisine) at 48 rue Mouffetard is a good place. It's a cute restaurant, also. I like Chez Lena et Mimile, a typical small French bistro or restaurant, at 32 rue Tournefort. 40 euro is right on the edge for it, unless you won't have any wine.

Finally, if you're a total foodie and he's not, why not choose what you want and pay for it yourself, if it's just that he refuses to pay more than 40 euro? I wouldn't let someone tell me what to eat.

We had two lovely, fairly inexpensive dinners at Le Parraudin on Rue Saint Jacques. The lamb and the duck confit were delicious and the service was excellent.

There are many good recommendations posted so far. I second Brasserie Balzar; not so much for the quality of the food; although it can be superb. Rather for the upbeat atmosphere, conviviality of the wait staff and being a part of what Paris was many years ago. Your husband will no doubt love the Poulet roti/ frites (fried chicken with French fries) available two ways. Their Steak Tartare is excellent as are many side dishes etc. The house wines are very good and reasonably priced. Please reserve; you will get a better table.

My last trip I walked by Brasserie Balzar...partly because of Adam Gopnik's book Paris to the Moon..a good read. It looked nice, but I had already planned to another resto...next year.

We had a terrific meal at Chez Fernand on rue Christine tis past December.

maren, Le Pre Verre would satisfy both of you. Reasonable wines, creative menu and it should be under 30 euros per person if you choose the formula menu. It's located at 8 rue Thenard on a small street between rue des Ecole and Boul Saint Germain in the 5th Have a Blissful honeymoon ;;) Deborah

Cristina, remember it's their HONEYMOON, a time to practice and employ communication and compromise ;;) I don't think they are going to tell each other what to eat on their honeymoon, at least I would hope not, But then what do I know, I've only been married 30+ years ;;) Deborah

Great meal and not too expensive at all at L'AOC, 14, rue des Fosses St. Bernard in the 5th. Short menu, rustic ambiance and generous portions of homey but well-prepared dishes.

Just avoid all those places where the staff stand outside with plastic replicas of the food. It's really easy to eat badly in the 5th, probably more so than in any other popular arrondissements. Follow the suggestions on the board.

La Table de Fabrice - 13, Quai de la Tournelle, 01 44 07 17 55. Right next to La Tour d'Argent, in the 5th - but not at all in that price range.

Many good ones. Le Petite Prince is at the top of my list and close to you.

Also if you get an urge for a real American Breakfast, there is Breakfast in America on Rue Ecoles.
