We have made our plans for Bologna for this upcoming July. Now we need your restaurant and food recommendations. Grazzi

Here is my report from a couple of years ago, with details on several meals in Bologna at the end of the report. Note that many of the very good restaurants are located a bit out of the city but within taxi distance. (We are saving those for our next visit)

My reccomendations are:
for a funky dinner, NOT typical food: MARCO FADIGA BISTROT www.marcofadigabistrot.it ; OSTERIA AL 15 in Via Mirasole, very nice and good typical food; ALICE in the center of the town, small and crowded, very good food but, be careful, no written menu, you have to listen the waiter; DUE LUNE www.2lune.eu which is also pizzeria; TRATTORIA DEL ROSSO, nice and cheap www.trattoriadelrosso.it . Bologna has fabulous food. We had a great meal at Trattoria Anna Maria (Via Belle Arti, 17/A.

Notes about our dinner in Bologna:
Osteria de’Poeti is located in an out-of-the way area on a quiet street off Piazza Cavour. If we didn’t have a recommendation and directions, this dinner wouldn’t have happened. It was an exceptional place decorated with old Italian cooking utensils. We were seated in the “fireplace room” by our waiter, Giacomo. I discussed our intention to eat strictly Bolognese food, and he made suggestions. We shared a complimentary dish of authentic mortadella and a glass of spumanti. Also, tortellini in brodo, then tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce and, green ravioli stuffed with cheese in a light Alfredo sauce. Giacomo selected a wonderful vino rosso for us. For dessert—a soft, warm cheese macaroon in a light custard sauce with tiny raspberries. Outstanding. |
An update -
We ate at Trattoria Gianni, just off of Piazza Maggiore and mentioned in one of the above the above links. We also ate at Osteria dei Poeti, just off of Piazza Cavour. Both were good. We are not foodies but my preference goes to Trattoria Gianni. For another option, we ate at Pizzeria Giri near our hotel. The hotel (Guernica) is a few blocks the other side of the train station from the historic center. The owner is a relocated Sicilian and the four of us ate for about 50euro. Two of the four had pizza. |
I also ate at Osteria dePoeti in Bologna. It was lunch and it was fabulous. I have searched for the same kind of canneloni I had there and have never found them of the same quality. That is the only place I have been to in Bologna and it was the best food of our 11 day trip that included Rome, Venice and Florence.

I second the recommendation for Trattoria Anna Maria - we really enjoyed the food & atmosphere when we were there two years ago.
