Restaurant dress

The Fodor's guide to Paris shows certain restaurants as requiring a jacket and tie. Is this true at lunch as well as at dinner? I am doubly confused after reading the thread on dress in Europe in general. Thanks.

Tie and jacket not needed in Paris restaurants unless you are going to a two or three Michelin star place. Casual attire is accepted, but sneakers are not generally worn.

Thanks, Suzanne. Of course, this is a Michelin two-star that I'm looking at.

If it is a Michelin, a tie and jacket is worn even at lunch.

If you're going to a "classy" place, seems to me you'd want to be dressed accordingly... If the restaurant to which you refer is in the downtown or businss districts, nearly all the clientelle will be dressed accordinlgy. In all the tour guides, be assured that "dress in general" does not apply, necessaarily, to the fancier places. All in all, while out and about, a pair of nicely tailored slacks, classic shirt, blazer/jacket, with a tie in your pocket, would seem to be not only casual and comfortable, but more than appropriate anywhere you go.

Albert
If the guidebook says "jacket and tie"
that is information provided to the guidebook by the restaurant. It is a policy they want to convey to the public. Even at lunch they will cater to a business crowd and don't want tourists in jeans or track suits sitting down to lunch. Yes it is possible that if you arrive at the restaurant and don't have a tie on, but you are dressed respectably, some places will be happy to let you in, but some will not.
If it is that level of restaurant, you will certainly not be out of place with a jacket and tie, so why take the chance? After lunch you can always take the tie off, or not, if you will be continuing your tourist activites after lunch. Or make a quick trip back to the hotel for a change of clothes.
