Resort Hotel Algarve Region, Portugal

I am looking for advice on finding a nicely upscale resort hotel in the Algarve region, preferrably on the beach or at least close by for a weekend getaway from Seville, Spain.

Atmosphere should be relaxed, but still special. Nice rooms and beds would be nice, too, as well as some nice surroundings.

Any advice and recommendations would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance for any tips.

Two years ago I stayed at the Sheraton Algarve Hotel on the outskirts of Albufeira. It is part of the luxury collection of Starwood Hotels. It was wonderful and I am sure it will meet your criteria. It is about 10 to 15 minutes from the town of Albufeira but there are a couple of very good restaurants across from the Sheraton where we ate most nights. It is located on a cliff overlooking the beach. Beautiful grounds.

Thank you, Scotia. The Sheraton already caught my attention and their prices appear reasonable for the time I am looking at it. Good to hear you had a favourable experience.

I remember one trip report that could have some material for your consideration:

With respect to the Sheraton Algarve, we stayed there over the New Years holiday last year (2005/2006) and found it to be just OK, not great. As we had never been to the Algarve region, I can't comment on the location (are all the resorts so far removed from anyting else?) The rooms were clean, but nothing great. We found the amenities to be lacking although I guess if you are a golfer then it would be a good location. The service was not at all on par to what one would expect from a Luxury Collection property (both my husband and myself are Starwood Platinum members and thus stay at a good number of Luxury Collection hotels for holidays). As a comparison, we just got back from Spain this year and stayed at both the Alfonso XII (Seville) and Westin Palace and I found both those properties to be much more in line with what one would expect for a Luxury Collection in terms of rooms and service. So I guess if you are getting a really good rate then it may be an OK resort, but make sure you have a car if you want to go anywhere because it is definately not near anything else but golf.
