Cathy -

By the name, I'm assuming it is in the general Forum des Halles area. If this is true, it may or may not be O.K. It depends on EXACTLY where it is.

Please find out the address or at least what it is near and I'll look it up on my map for you. We were just there 2 weeks ago so everything is still pretty fresh in my mind. The Forum des Halles area is where lots of younger, and some of the "undesireables" hang out. During the day it isn't terrible, however at night it is a known drug area; I wouldn't hang out there.

Please try to find out more about exactly where it is. I don't want to blow this out of proportion if it is in a completely different place than I am thinking.

:-)

The address I have for Residence des Halles is 4 rue des Halles in the 1st arrondissement. Phone is 0140138580. Nearest metro is Chatelet. We booked it thru www.parisdiscount.com. It is supposed to be a 2 star hotel. Any other info is most appreciated, as we will have our son (11) and daughter (15) with us and want to be in a good area.

Thanks.

In Les Halles, you'll really be in the middle of everything, and your chidren will be happy to stay in this "young" neighborhood. It is NOT a quiet residential area, but it is NOT a drug area either (for this, you'll have to go further North, towards Barbès or La Chapelle). It's very lively, central, with a heavy police presence. In a nutshell, I wouldn't worry about safety, but would enjoy the fact that it is very convenient for the metro and within walking distance of lots of sights (Notre Dame, Sainte Chapelle, the Latin Quarter, the Marais, the Louvre, etc. )

Hi Cathy -

I tried to e-mail you but it wouldn't work. I looked it up and it is near where I thought. Fortunately, it is more south than I thought and that is good. I know Vincent lives there so I would generally trust his opinion about things but I'm still a little leary.

Not too far away is Rue St. Denis which has strip joints and some "interesting" people on it. Like I said, during the day it's no big deal (we walked around there a couple of times) but at night, I'd still be unsure.

My advice, post a question on this Fodor's site asking for people's input on the Les Halles area. Get more people's opinions before you change your mind or redo your plans. Again, I'm not trying to be an alarmist I just think caution is in order especially with kids along.

Have a great weekend :-)
