Reserving ahead of time or walking up..

In the US it is cheaper to reserve cars ahead of time online. I was curious if anyone knows if I may get a better deal just walking up with out a reservation at FCO? The rental prices seem to be very high (not to mention the fuel prices), so any way to save a bit would be great!
I'm curious because I found the last time I was in Italy, the train tickets were cheaper buying them in the country as we went, rather than purchasing them via the internet before our arrival..

I always book a care beforehand and check back to see if the rates go down. But it seems that the rates usually go up and the selection of cars goes down as time gets closer to arrival.

The one way to save on car rental in Italy is to not rent at the airport.

Thanks for the response
So possibly pick up a car in Rome? Do you have any car rental recommendations ?

It's my understanding that it's always cheaper to book from the US. We have used AutoEurope, a broker, who has arranged very good rates for us in both France and Italy. They will meet any rate you happen to find that is lower than theirs. They were prompt in answering e-mails and very easy to deal with. All reservations were made on their web site: www.autoeurope.com

Incidentally, airport pickup and dropoff is always more expensive than using an agency in town.

Another good broker is Nova Rentacar.

We've used them twice and have been completely satisfied.
