Reservations at Tuscany wineries?
 

My husband and I will be visiting Tuscany for 3 days in September with Montalcino as home base. Do you need advance reservations to visit wineries in the surrounding area (Montalcino/Montepulciano)? I have heard mixed information so any light that can be shed would be appreciated!

Some wineries you can schedule a tour/tasting while others don't do that.

Near Montalcino we really enjoyed a tasting and tour at Altesino Winery.

I do believe Montepulciano is one of the best places in Italy to taste wine for free and with no reservation at all!

Just go on the main street, plenty of wineries that will leave you taste their own products: wine, cheese, salami and so on... for free! If you like one, just stay there and you and your husband could have lovely brushetta, local cheese flakes and a glass of delicious Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, for example, at just 5€ each!

We just got back from 3 nights in Montalcino. You will love it! We didn't make reservations in advance because we didn't want to be locked in. B&B told us about an intimate winery in area but it was closed when we got there (can't remember name) and so we continued on to Banfi (very large & beautiful winery). I agree, best wine tasting was right on main street. Many were more than happy to give samples. I must recommend the bar on main street (can't remember what it was called but it is known as "the bar". Looks sort of like a deli when you walk in but if you go all the way to the back, it has an unbelievable view and all windows. We sat there & had wine & cheese all 3 nights we were there & watched the sunset. It was absolutely breathtaking! (it is on side of street facing Montelpuciano down towards end near Palazzina Cesira B&B. Food there was pretty good too. Enjoy!
