elle,

DH and I will be in Paris Jun 19-26.

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 05:31 PM

I thought some posters bought tickets to Paris just this past week, when Air France had that sale?
I heard the prices were good, sad we were not able to take advantage of them.

elaine May 9th, 2005 05:38 PM

Yes Scarlett, I was reading about people about to pounce on that sale and I was jealous.

My favorite areas to stay in are the 1st and 6th, but the 1st wins by a mile.
I've thought about staying in the Marais though haven't done it yet.

elle May 9th, 2005 06:46 PM

Where is Capo, anyway? I miss him.
Hope all is okay.

We may end up back in Paris sometime after November anyway. We have enough AmEx points for a $149 companion ticket, so who knows?

Jocelyn, maybe we should start a GTG for June thread?

elle May 9th, 2005 06:48 PM

(apologies to OP for the threadjack)

Oh, and some of those VT hits were definitely from me. I think you've inspired me to buy the expat's book and to move Before Sunset up in my Netflix Queue (DH hated Before Sunrise so I moved "Sunset" further down on the list)

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 06:50 PM

He's doing fine but he doesn't really check out Fodor's much anymore. I've implored him to post and he says he will but...

I agree, his wit was always a great addition to this board!! He sure can play with words like no other.

elle May 9th, 2005 06:55 PM

Tell him I'm pining for him and that I need some advice on what to download to my iPod. Maybe that'll lure him back!

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 06:56 PM

LOL, that's funny, Elle! I just signed up for Netflix (after much urging from Statia) last week & have watched (get this!) Before Sunrise (which I had never seen) and this weekend The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which I had no idea was such a tearjerker. Such beautiful movies, both of them. But, Elle, he'll probably hate Before Sunset, too, unless he's just gaga over Paris like us.

(many multiple apologies to OP)

Elle, hopefully we'll be in Paris at the same time after November & we could do lunch together. I definitely want to do the Jim Haynes' Sunday dinner thingymabobber as it reminds me of Adrienne Monnier's famous Sunday dinners where she'd have such illustrious writers as James Joyce & F. Scott Fitzgerald over for dinner. Very literary, MY DEAH!

Beatchick May 9th, 2005 06:57 PM

I will AND I will e-mail this thread to him - it'll tickle him to death!!

Scarlett May 9th, 2005 07:57 PM

Now, back to the business at hand!
We are considering staying in Paris for more than a week, hopefully 2 weeks, in a year, in the fall.
For that amount of time, my husband thinks an apt would be great, we can get in food, and take day trips and venture farther out and have our little flat waiting back at "home"..
so while we might be more adventurous in that sense, we will most likely keep our address somewhere in the 6th or 7th . That is unless Jocelyn tells me that the 16th was perfect! :)

elaine May 10th, 2005 02:33 AM

Scarlett, you know Paris so well.
The 7th has never particularly appealed to me, what was it like staying there in a flat--pros and cons? What was your particular immediate neighborhood like, transportation-wise?
The 16th definitely appeals to me, but transportation seems to me to be less convenient. I'll have to give that one some thought. I've read about a couple of small hotels there--I don't anticipate in the next few years, going for long enough to rent a flat.

However, my dream, when I retire, is to put all my belongings in storage for a year, and before I move to Boca Del Vista or wherever I go, spend at least 6 months living in Paris. Maybe the other 6 months in Venice. But the dollar has to get stronger!

kismetchimera May 10th, 2005 06:35 AM

Elaine, that would be a wonderful way to spend the first year of your retirement and enjoy" La Dolce Vita".:)

elle May 10th, 2005 06:48 AM

beatchick, when we're in Montmartre, I'm going to stop by Le Ronsard and tell them that it was "highly recommended" on the Internet. Ahem.

:p

Beatchick May 10th, 2005 03:56 PM

LOL - Elle, you're my hero!

elsiejune May 10th, 2005 05:04 PM

Scarlett: You might want to consider vrbo #9718 (chezmichelaparis.com) for a two week stay next fall. This flat is beautifully appointed, filled with the latest appliances (but no A/C) as well as the finest antiques. Located on rue de Verneuil, it is in the 7th, bordering the 6th (just behind the d'Orsay), so the location is ideal for someone who likes the buzz of the 6th in a quieter neighborhood. It is a perfect pied-a-terre, less expensive than ParisPerfect, and you have the added bonus of making a new friend when you deal with the delightful American owner. Doesn't two weeks in Paris seem perfect, I mean if you can't spend two years, that is? Bonne chance!

ParisAmie May 10th, 2005 05:57 PM

To all of you who have responded to my post regarding Paris repeaters. This has been a most informative thread with many thoughts and ideas from others who also love Paris.

Thank you all - I look forward to many more thoughts here; it's been a hoot!

Paris Amie

Scarlett May 10th, 2005 06:10 PM

elsiejune, thanks for the apt suggestion. I had looked at that one before we chose our March apartment. It is very nice, I like the size and the building.
I will keep in on my list :) Yes, Paris for 2 weeks in Oct/Nov sounds excellent.

bob_brown May 10th, 2005 06:14 PM

I think it all depends on whether or not you have found a place that is highly satisfactory. I moved around the first 3 trips. On the third trip I found a hotel that was very satisfactory and, rather than risking a different place, we now return to the same hotel.

I am not in the hotel much during the day, but I want a comfortable place for the night.

Having found one that is both comfortable and close to 2 Metro stations and several bus lines, I ceased to look for new places. Go with a sure winner!

Madison May 11th, 2005 03:40 PM

Kismetchimera - I am so sorry for taking so long to answer your question. It is The Brighton Hotel across from the Tuileries and on the Rue de Rivoli. I happen to like the views I mentioned earlier and have to pay the price of sounds of traffic if I have the windows open. If closed, it's quiet.

Go to www.esprit-defrance.com
They have several hotels. Go to the graphic search and you will find it. Rooms are 123 euros for a economy single all the way up to 275 euros for a triple. Of course the rooms without a view are a lot more reasonable. I cannot vouch for those rooms at all or the ones under the arcade. I stay in the double with Tuileries view for 170 Euros.

Since I travel by myself it is a very good location for me. Every room I have had has been large. They are still renovating the hotel and if you decided to stay there definitely request a renovated room.

Madison May 11th, 2005 03:51 PM

Beatchick - I am very lucky I have found my home away from home. Another reason I stay at The Brighton is because I begin every morning going to the Tuileries and feeding the birds, ducks and even the fish in the pond. Someone at the hotel gives me a little bag of rolls every morning. The sparrows even eat out of my hands. Then I start my sightseeing for the day. It's a tradition I started on my first day/1st trip to Paris and have continued it.
