Renting home in Scotland

We are thinking of spending two weeks in Scotland in the fall. Has anyone rented a home there? If so, what area would be good?

A couple of years ago we rented (privately) a small house in a tiny town on the west coast near to Dunoon. From there we explored the lochs of the area as well as Oban and the islands off the coast. We loved the area and found it very easy to ferry across to Glasgow when we needed night life. A very beautiful and historic area with much history.

Self catering (the British term for renting a vacation cottage/apartment) is very common in Scotland. All of the sites Sheila provided are good - I have used or referred people to 4 of them and all were totally satisfactory.

The first one - uniquescotland.com - has an especially good website.

You can also try Mackays - which is another terrific agency. www.mackays-scotland.co.uk They will send you a free 150 page full color catalog.

And of course the National Trust for Scotland also rent fabulous holiday homes.

The National Trust (and the landmark Trust) require that you are members before they send their details. They both have lovely properties tho'

Sheila - that requirement is only for UK residents. I get the Nat'l Trust's catalog posted to me in the States every year (and have not been a member since the late 70's).

We rented a cottage in Callendar in 1999. It was the Leny Lodge. Very nice, located on a farm just outside the town. Centrally located, altho I would look at perhaps staying one week there and one week in another part of Scotland.

I found it on the Scotland national tourist office site

Could be. Landmark definitely need membership whereever you are.

I didn't put up the Tourist Board site because I find it such anightmare to navigate.

It is, however visitscotland.com and you'll also find stuff on Calmac's site- www.calmac.co.uk
