Renting Cell Phones in Italy?

Hello fellow travelers! My Fiance and I are travling throughout Italy on our honeymoon at the end of this month and are trying to figure out the best way to call home.

I've read that you can rent cell phones in Italy for about 30euro a week and use phone cards to call out. Is this true? The articles have never explained HOW to get hooked up with one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

type in "renting cellphones" into the search this forum just above your post and you will get many, many threads dealing with this issue, but right off the bet I could tell you - DO NOT RENT!

correction:

type in: mobile phone rental

If you are only interested in calling outside Italy (not receiving calls), a phone card at a cost of 5 Euros would serve your needs--about 3 hours worth of international calls from any phone.
If you want a cell phone for other reasons, consider buying. The $49 phone from Mobal would be cheaper than rental for two weeks (mobal.com).

I just got back from Italy. Before I left I rented a cell phone through my Verizon Wireless (my wife wanted to be able to call our kids). They partner with a company in the UK, WorldRoam. The cell phone coverage was excellent. The cost was $3/day plus $1.49/min. You can forward your current cell phone to the rental phone so you don't have to worry about telling people about a new number.

Odegard - Before we bought two tri-bands on ebay, we were considering renting cellphones from this place in Florence.

http://www.cells4rent.com/home.htm

The website says that they will ship the phones to other cities for pick-up and that they can be shipped back to them.

Of course, they have your cc number for any charges but hopefully everything is on the up-and-up.

i too am traveling to italy and want the convenience of a cell phone.
i just got back from the cingular store.
basically, many new phones atr tri-band and work in italy. you just need to call your provider and add international roaming for $5.99 a month ( at least for cingular) the rates are a bit steep, .99cebts a minute but texts are only .20 cents.

i am definitaley going to try this.
good luck
