Renting car outside London
Can anyone recommend a good place on the outskirts of London to rent a car that is accessible by the Tube? Is Heathrow Airport OK or too crazy? I've driven in England before but it was 1981!

It will depend a lot on where you are headed to once you collect the car. Also the day of the week can make a HUGE difference,
If you are headed west towards Stonehenge - or Bath - or the Cotswolds - or SW England -- then Heathrow is a great place to pick up a car. But some days/directions it is just as easy to pick up a car right in central London near Marble arch and jumping on the main road out of town to the west
If you are headed south like Brighton - or the south coast - or Kent -- then Gatwick is good.
And other directions would mean other places would be good. Not all locations will be near a tube station but still easily accessed.
So what are you plans after you have the car??

We're driving to Stratford Upon Avon and spending the night there. May 23 is a Friday, and it's also the start of a bank holiday weekend for them, too. What do you think? And thanks for quick replay, JanisJ.

You have two good choices. Heathrow -- if you want wander a bit and see things enroute (like Blenheim Palace or some Cotswold villages)
Or you can take the train all the way to Straford -upon-Avon and get your car there. I know there are at least Alamo and Avis and probably other rental agencies in Stratford.

That's how I have car rental set up now, with pickup in Stratford Upon Avon. But trying to buy three rail tickets online has been a hassle for me. Plus trains are expensive, so that's why I'm thinking of changing car rental location. Thanks for your advice.

You really do not pay much if any more picking up a car at LHR.
The only real way to save money renting from Windsor is to use one of the small local companies like Baldocks Garage. But then you have to return the car to the same location - whereas a national chain allows one-way rental w/o penalty.
