dutyfree makes a good point. Rome has a lot of graffiti, and it is dirty and crowded, but for most people those are very secondary issues. The history, the public art, and the liveliness of the city overwhelm those things. Once you lay your eyes on places like the Patheon, Piazza Navona, St. Peters, etc., the rest of that stuff just fades away.

Well while not an apt...I would recommend Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere...this is a converted monastery with a gated entrance and have spacious rooms surrounding a courtyard full of orange trees and one building breakfast is served and has internet access...bikes available for guests to use and umbrellas as well. We have walked from this hotel all the way to the Vatican in 15 minutes down a nice tree lined sidewalk along the Tiber. Pop out of the hotel and you are right close to being able to cross the Tiber and into the historic district. The hotel is situated in a quieter area of Trastevere and like many Italian hotels offer a nice discount for cash customers.

If you watch this italian video of Trastevere, you will understand Trastevere (watch the entire video)         www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPvdotXvUGE

Trastevere is known and respected for its graffiti art, there are urban art books about graffiti in Trastevere.  Take a look at this Trastevere art poster and the humorous comment below.
