Renting an apartment in Positano or Amalfi
I have started doing research on the Amalfi coast part of our trip in May and early June, 2010. I had thought we would stay in a hotel in Positano, but now we are going to be joined our two sons who are 20 and 25 and so, I think, I need to find an apartment. Does anyone have any opinions on the two different towns and what might be better for twentysomethings and fiftysomethings?

Here are reviews of apartments from SlowTrav.com for the Compania region (which includes Positano, Amalfi, etc): http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/vr/list.asp?r=Campania
Also, here is a listing of rentals and rental agencies for that area: http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/listings/campania.asp

We LOVED Positano - I was 30, hubby was 31, and my brother was 27 when we went.
We also used www.summerinitaly.com and were very happy with their services!

The question of the beach and disco scene is moot because there will not be much of a scene in late May.
I would choose Amalfi. But both are lovely so choose based on which apartments you find.
I would guess that your money will go further in Amalfi.

to be totally fair...I am partial to the Amalfi-Salerno part of the coast in general.
Positano is really, really, really quiet off-season (although May would be picking up) Amalfi is quiet as well, but there just seems to be more of a buzz about it - I have not been in May to Positano though - closest I've stayed there was April when it was very romantic, but not much open. When I was very young (teens and very early 20s) I preferred Sorrento anyway to either of them ;-) for the expat scene.
There are more reasonably prices restaurants in Amalfi, if that helps (although - wouldn't matter if you will be cooking I guess!)
Positano has better views from many of the rentals (and hotels) but you may pay for that in steps! Amalfi is rather flat ;-) (if that's a factor for you.)
May depend on where you will be coming from as well...Positano is closer and easier to get to from Sorrento...Amalfi is closer and easier from Salerno.
Honestly? you won't go wrong with either since I'm sure you'll see them both.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. I have just sent an email to Residence La Tavolozza in Positano to see about staying there. I am thinking after 5 days in an apartment in Rome we may be ready to put them in their own room at a B&B or hotel. And I like La Tavolozza B&B prices. I read some very complimentary things about the place from other posters.
I don't mind the steps since it helps work off extra calories I want to consume in Italy and we will be there 2nd week of June so it should be plenty lively for everyone.
