Renting a scooter

My husband & I will be taking a bicycle tour in Tuscany in mid-September. After that we have 3 days free before heading back home from Rome. Our bike tour ends in Pienza & we are thinking of either renting a scooter & touring around Orvieto region & then over to the coast(Grosseto area) or taking the train to Naples & renting a scooter there & heading out to Amalfi. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I would advise against renting a scooter for travel along any high-traffic roads. Perhaps you already know this. This rule would especially apply for me along the Amalfi coast. I consider it simply too dangerous to ride a scooter there unless you are a native and know every little turn and every nook you can duck into if there is a problem. Good luck.

Declady - If you want to rent on the Amalfi Coast it's better to rent in Sorrento or Positano.

Don't even think of driving in Naples ...

Hi Dec,

Assuming that you are experienced on 2-wheeled motorized vehicles, I suggest that you rent a motorcycle.

You will need the horsepower.

If you are not, I suggest that you not do this at all unless ou have a death wish.

I guess the consensus is that we should stay in Tuscany/Umbria regions then? We rented a scooter in Tuscany a few years ago & we didn't have any difficulty but we weren't on any major roads. Then my next question is if we were to rent a scooter from Chiusi, does anyone know if there is anywhere to store our luggage while we travel?

I don't think you'd need to worry that much about biking on the Amalfi coast.

Yes, the road is narrow and can be busy.
But average speeds along there are usually less than 20 mph. - so if you're experienced bikers you're relatively safe IMO. This is more an area for minor bumps and scrapes between vehicles than for serious accidents.

Just my opinion ...

P.s. Why would you want to bike the Grosseto area?

Declady Feb 17th, 2005 10:40 AM

Our reasoning for Grosseto area was that we know someone in that area BUT I really do have my heart set on the Amalfi Coast so now we are considering renting a little roadster in Rome & driving to Amalfi. This may be safer than a scooter & then we have a place for our luggage! Now where should we stay? Any suggestions on rooms that overlook the water?

If you put Positano, Amalfi or Praiano Hotels in the search box you'll find loads of threads and recommendations.

Otherwise I suggest you re-post your Q with an 'Positano (or wherever) sea-view hotels' heading.

Good luck.
