Renting a house or apartment in Spain

My wife and I are thinking of renting a place for about 2 to 3 months where we can relax and enjoy the culture of Spain while also using it as a base from which to periodically explore other areas. Has anyone done a similar thing and what advice would you share? Any specific pointers would be helpful.

What time of the year? Spain covers a large area, but it's not that difficult getting around. In the summer I would base myself in the north, any wherefrom the Navarra and Basque country to Galicia. The options are somewhat different in the spring and fall.

We spent two fantastic months in Barcelona in February/March 2009. We meant to do trips but were having such a great time we stayed put (and had a lot of visitors! Be prepared for that!).

Thanks guys. It would be in the summer. We have made two previous trips to Spain. I was looking for any specific contact information as we are open to virtually any interesting area for use as a base, especially one that exposes us to the everyday culture of the country.

For the Basque country, check out: www.nekatur.net

In Navarra, it's: www.casasruralesdenavarra.net, www.baztan-bidasoa.com, www.casasruralesnavarra.com and www.irunaldea.com

For Asturias: http://www.casasprieto.com

In Cantabria: http://www.casasruralescantabria.net

These will give you a starting point.

The govt. there now requires that private houses/apts. be licensed and that license numbers appear in any advertising. Without the license owners can be fined from 3,000 to 30,000€. The renter's penalty would probably be eviction. Who knows.

Where are you going?

Barcelona has a whole network of rental apartment agencies. Telling you all about it will be useless if you're not going there.

And Spain's culture is no more monolithic than Italy's, France's, Germany's or England's. Even more than those, Spain is various sub-regions knitted together into a nation (Basque, Catalonia, Andalusian, etc).

Thanks BigRuss. I have been to Spain twice previously, including Barcelona and I just wanted to start a discussion to see what ideas come forth. It is a long way off for us as we will be elsewhere in Europe this year again but it never hurts to get new ideas or angles. We will not decide what areas to spend time in until much later.
