renting a car when leaving Lisbon
Renting a car inn Lisbon and getting out of town easily would be great. Any suggestions?
Is the train station near the interstate? |
Hi, Georgiadot,
I assume from your question that you are arriving at the train station (?) Actually, there are several train stations in Lisbon. One is Santa Apolonia, one is out at the Parque Nacoes, and one is Sete Rios. Do you know where you'll be arriving? The new station at Parque Nacoes is close to the new bridge, if you're headed east, and not too far from the superhighways (there are several). For the other two, it's a bit more complicated. With more information, we could be more helpful. LR |
The area around Santa Apolonia station is much more congested than the Oriente area.
If your train stops at Oriente, get off there! Oriente was the site of Expo'98 and many new access routes were constructed for those events. It's also convenient to the Vasco Da Gama Bridge (which opened during Expo'98) if you're going south. Of course this presupposes your arranging with the rental company to pick up your rental car there. BTW Your post is in the Spain forum and not in the Portugal forum. I strongly recommend against dropping off a Portugal rental car in Spain! Dropoff charges will be very high. |
Ireynold, don't forget Rossio and Entrecampos.

We just came back from 10 days in Portugal. We rented a car at Lisbon Airport and traveled first from Lisbon to Sintra (3 nights) and then to Busaco Palace (1 night) and then to Porto Airport where we turned car in (after 2 nights in Porto we traveled back to Lisbon via train). It is ESSENTIAL that you use a GPS device...it saved us. We bought a Garmin..i forget which model but for Portugal maps (and US ones too), it has a "70" at the end of the model number. I would not recommend driving a car inside a big city like Porto or Lisbon as parking is difficult. Hope this helps.
