Renting a car to drive from Copenhagen to Paris

Any suggestions for renting a car to drive from Copenhagen to Paris in September 2014? I've rented cars in Spain and Italy, with different city drop-offs within the same country, but am not familiar with picking up and dropping off in different countries. We would probably want to keep the car for five days or so, to be able to stop and explore along the way.

Wondering if the pick up and drop off in separate countries would make the rental more expensive, or would not have any effect on price.

Yes it will likely increase the cost by hundreds of euros unfortunately!

Yes, I am seeing that. It looks as if a solution is to drive to the nearest city near a border, cross on public transportation, and then rent another car in the next city. Sounds complicated (pain in the @$$)but can't figure out another way. We really want to see smaller towns along whatever route we choose.

Depending on what you want to see, it is not that complicated. You might choose to take the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg (or another city), rent in Hamburg and then figure a drop off and pick up point along the French-German border. I recall that Strasbourg, although in France, was sometimes acceptable as an exchange point. Check with www.autoeurope.com; talk to a rep about it.

We did the drop off in Portugal, taxi across the border and picked up a new car in Spain. It was worth it to save a huge drop off fee. Taxi came to our hotel in Porto and took us to car rental agency in Spain so it really wasn't much of a hassle.

That's a long way by taxi (100 mi. ?).

It depends. Some specific across the border drop off between specific cities in a Germany and France, between Germany and Netherlands are not bad. To do the optimal combination of where to rent and where to train requires specific destinstions. If you are not sure where you are heading to, it would cost you to gain the flexibility for this type of trip.

One could take the ferry from Copenhagen to Lübeck and start the drive from there.
