Renting a car in Germany if you're over 75?

My father in law is flying into Frankfurt next month and would like to rent a car if possible. He turned 76 in March. (FWIW, he is German, although he no longer carries a German passport, so German is his native tongue, and he has driven around Germany many times, most recently two years ago in a new Volvo he picked up in Sweden.)
If there are any agencies that will rent to over 75s, which ones?
Thanks.

Hello BTilke, I have read many times that if one is over age 75 it can be a problem renting a car (probably because of insurance issues). I would phone the various rental car agencies to see if there is one that will allow him to rent a car. Or do the various websites for car rental agencies show age restrictions? I hope that something can be worked out as people age differently and I know many people in their late 70's that are so active physically and mentally.

Hi BT,

Have you checked Nova, AutoEurope and Gemut?

I don't recall a maximum age.

Another poster, don76, has had this problem in the past but now has it solved.

This coming week (April 13th) he's renting a car in Munich from NOVA/EUROPCAR.

I'm 78, in the same situation as your father-in-law (i.e. German by birth, US citizen. Never had a problem renting from AutoEurope. So far, my only concession to my age has been to switch from manual to automatic transmission. Driving and shifting on those alpine passroads is getting to be a bit hard on my arthritis!

There is no need to call all the agencies separately. One call to AutoEurope and they will tell you which agencies will rent to what age.
