Renting a car in England
I'm one of the 4 women going with zwho to England in the fall.
We also need to know if we can rent a car with an automatic transmisson in England. We could then take turns driving around. Please help with this question. |
Sure you can rent an automatic -- but you must be sure to reserve it ahead of time because automatics are sorta "special orders".

Re: Janis
Is it more expensive getting an automatic than a stick shift? |
Yes, an automatic is more expensive. dependin on the model/agency one can be £30 to £100 per week more.
Also - the smallest (and therefore cheapest) three classes - mini, economy, compact, different companies might use different terms - are very seldom available w/ an automatic. So you can rent a compact stick for MUCH less than a mid-sized automatic. |
meant to add - shopping around usually really pays off since the rates for automatics vary so much . . . .

For 4 adults with luggage the smallest cars are really too small anyway IMO (way smaller than in the US) - so you would probably want a mid size to be comfortable.

Just a quick FYI...When shopping around also ask about additional driver fees. This is usually a per day charge per additional driver. And, how many additional drivers can you sign on? Answers to these questions might help you choose the rental company and avoid a sudden suprise. You'll have to do the additional driver bit to be covered for insurance purposes.
I think others have already answered the automatic shift questions. - Sharon |
