Renting a car in Chiusi (Tuscany) on a Sunday

Hello,

My family and I are planning to take a train from Rome to Chiusi this June. We planned to hire a car in Chiusi to drive around the Montepulciano area, but I just realised that most car rental agencies seem to be closed on Sundays. Has anyone here used a car rental agency I. Chiusi that was open on Sunday, even if it were just to hand over the car? Thank you!

This is one of the irony of renting a car to gain "flexibility" -- the itinerary get bound by the weekend and lunch break office hours. There are independent agencies in Chiusi who claim to be open on Sunday on request. I have stayed away from independent agencies due to a need to drop off the car elsewhere.

I think airports and large stations are options for a Sunday pickup. I check key components such as rental car office hours when I construct my itinerary, and so far I have designed out this type of problem.

I just had a look at the Italian websites of the car rental agencies in Chiusi and they are all closed on Sundays.

What you could do instead is take a taxi to Rome's Ciampino Airport and drive to Montepulciano from there. It's about 2 hour drive.

You might find a small rental company willing to rent to you on a Sunday. Otherwise, most people picking up in Rome use the rental agencies at Villa Borghese and find it a good location to pick up with fairly easy driving out of the city. All the major car rentals are there and you don't incur an extra charge for pick up like at airports. You can read a bit about it on this post.

While some of the rental cars in the Villa Borghese area are in the underground parking structure, there are a few just off Via Veneto also. Avis is on Via Sardegna.

Check hours for the individual companies in the Villa Borghese area as some are open only Sunday mornings until 1 or so (some at Ciampino also used to have reduced hours on Sunday). If you Google Via Sardegna, Rome, Italy to Chiusi, Italy, you will see it's a fairly easy route out of Rome.

I use Auto Europe whenever renting a car abroad. If you aren't familiar with the company, it is called a consolidator. AE gets prices from a number of car rental agencies and then shows you the best rate. CHeck them out at WWW.AutoEurope.Com

AE has saved the day for us several times, given the proclivity of many car agencies to make trouble when returning a car...

Carolll is correct about AE and I have used them at least a dozen times in Europe. However, their sister company, Kemwel, has had better quotes recently when you consider full insurance with no deductibles. The other benefits are the same---same vendors at same locations.
